CHINESE EGG TRADE
Sixty-Five Cars Will Be Stored
on Pacific Coast.
TAKE PLACE OF EASTERN
Shipments Arc Now Com ins 1'roin
Northern Part of That Country. '
Vancouver Is Receiving
Bulk of Supplies.
According to figures compiled by authori
ties on tha subject, 65 cars, or 1!,;1009 cases,
of Chine eggs will go into etoraae on the
Pacific Coast at various points from Los
Ansoles to Seattle this Spring. This will
represent practically all the Importations
from now on, as very few of the foreign
6gs go into immediate consumption.
The Cardingshire, which reached Vancou-
ver. B. C. from the Orient yesterday,
brougn 6100 castas of Chinese ess, of which
J? 100 cases aro coming to Portland to bo
morcd. Two more steamers are en route,
bringing a total of between 35,000 and Ifi,
000 cases. The next C. P. It. steamer will
have 2500 cases, which arc for San Fran
cisco importers. So far as known these
. are all the Chinese eggs that have been
engaged
The e?gs now coining are from Northern
China, and, according to the United States
Consuls In that country, are of better qual
ity than the Southern China eggs which
were imported earlier in the year. Official
tests made by the City Chemist here have
Patfsflcd the importers on this point.
The quantity of Chinese eggs brought to
the Pacific Coast will probably not be large
enough to have any material effect on the
storage egg market. The Pacific Coast
annually consumes about 500 cars of East
ern storage eggs and the importations will,
therefore, simply result in the Coast using
a smaller quantity of Eastern eggs.
Price conditions will, as formerly, be
governed by the size of the laj in the East
ern and Middle Western states. It is too
early in the season to determine this ques
tion now. Should production in America
be heavy, the speculators who are investing
their money In Chinese eggs will not make
much out of tho deal.
The local egg market was steady yester
day. Dealers cleaned up readily at IR'-i
and It cents and it is believed this price
will prevail for fully week more. There
were shipping orders on the market and the
surplus was stored.
SUGAK .MARKET DOWN 10 CENTS
Coast PHres Respond to Reduction at East
er n Points.
AH grades of refined sugar declined Tt
cms yesterday, following a lO-cent drop in
the Eastern markets on the preceding day.
The course of the refined sugar market ts
due to the weakness of raws. Eastern ad
vices on th subject say:
"This reaction Is the direct result of
presssure to sell under unfavorable condi
tions. The accumulations of supplies in
bonded warehouses,. ir anticipation of the
reduced duties, must be manufactured and
distributed to the country before regular
buying of new supplies on normal lines can
be resumed. Homo refiners, however, have
been disposed to anticipate requirements for
April and May at an advance over prompt
values, which is an indication of improve
ment to come in raw sugar values. This im
pressslon should not be Interfered with by
anxiety on the part of Cuban holders to sel
in advance of inquiries from refiners to any
considerable extent."
GOOD MILLING DEMAND FOR WHEAT

The wheat market was firm yesterday at

ing demand in the Northwest and also in
quiry from California. Sellers were as
bullish as ever and not much business was
transacted.

HIGHER BUTTER PRICE IS QUOTED
Several City Creameries Advance to 29 Cents
on Squares.
Several of the city creameries announce
an advance of. U4 cents on print butter
today to the -9-cerft mark. Others wil
hold at the old price, and country cream
exy butter will also be unchanged. It is
possible "that before the day is over the
.price will be uniform, although soma of
the creamery men last night declared there
was no warrant for an advance. There is
no doubt, however, that supplies are clean
Ing up wel, and the market is In a healthy
condition.
The San Francisco market has been ad
vanclng. but may not go higher now.
there is a likelihood of Seattle buying at
ihat center coming to a stop, owing to
large shipment of New Zealand cubes be
ing due on the Sound.
Citrus uit oa Steamer.
The steamer in last night brought 11 cars
or orange and two cars of lemons, also
smalt assortment of vegetables.
Express receipts of asparagus were larger
than heretofore, but the market was steady
at 10 cents for white and 13 cents for
green. Grass was a cent higher yesterday
in California, owing to the strong Eastern
demand. A car of cabbage Is due today.
