FARMERS HOLD BACK
No Wheat Selling Yet on Ac
count of Taxes.
COUNTRY SUPPLIES SMALL
Growers Waiting for 9 0-Cent Mar
ket, but Buyers Cannot Advance
IV) ls Vithout Outside De
mand as at Present.
AUaousa tax time 1b approaching, wheat
holders in the country are showing no signs
of weakening, as sortie dealers thought they
would. Almust the only soiling dona recent
ly has been by speculators. Farmers are
holding out tor a l0-ccnt basis, and liud
strength for their position In the extreme
lightness of atouks. Some grain men estl
lnato farmers holdings at the present time
available for market, at only l.ono.OOO bush
els. There Is no doubt that the bulk of the
supply left In the country Is tn second bands
and there ha a place for all this dealers'
wheat.
Buying Prices are around 83 and 88 cents
for club. Millars and exporters will not
raise their bids, and consequently trading
lias come to a stop. The Oriental demand
for wheat, which, a week ago gava promise
of resulting In something, has ceased, prob
ably because of financial conditions on the
other side. There Is a little buying by
Oalifomlans, but tbey are not over keen.
It Is the general belief, however, that Cali
fornia will talis a lot of wheat before the
season Is over.
There Is no Improvement in sight yet In
tbe export flour trade. Mill feed, for this
reason, is firmer.

Commerce- Co in ml mm on.
NEW YORK. Feb. 18. After several weeks
of hesitation and growing; dullness, during
which the level of prices was almost sta
tionary, the stock market moved out of
its narrow groove today and, turned down
ward decisively. It was tbe most positive
movoment of the year which forced man'
stocks down from 1 to 2 points. Trading
was more active on the downward swing,
and after the force of Uie selling move
ment had spent itself, the market failed to
exhibit recuperative powers .and no sub
stantial recovery was effected.
The sharp break was ascribed primarily
to the further suspension by the Interstate
Commerce Commission, until September 12,
Of the 5 per cent Increase of freight rates
by the Kastern roads. This action was In
terpreted by traders ss ending hopes of a
speedy increase In rates.
An unsettling Influence was th softness
of Mteel, which had been conspicously firm
for several days. This stock was unloaded
in large amounts, Extensive European sell
ing accelerated the decline.
Western Union was strona- anri hpiu-a nn

Chicago Reflects Firmness of
Foreign Wheat Market.

Export Business Reported to Be In
Progress at DuluLU Corn Moves
Up -In ijjiuimlhy and Oats
A re S u pported .
CHICAGO. Feb. 16. Wheat prices today
showed unvarying firmness, the result
chietly of 'Muropean markets gradually
working higher. Closing quotations here
were steady at to c pet advance. Corn
finished unchanged to a sixteenth up and
oats with a gain of a shade, but provisions
were off 2 Vi 5 to 7 c.
Sunsplcion that export business xvas in
progress at uluta formed an element of
the strength that characterized wheat.
Not much selling pressure could be put
on corn, higher cables and the firmness of
wheat being too serious handicaps for the
bears.
Oats had fair support, mainly from shorts.
Packers aud other longs made tree offers
of provisions. As a result, the market gave
-way, regardless of an upward slant in the
price of bogs.

DR. THORNTON PLANS TRIP
Physician Bitten by Mad Dog Will
Make Voyage for Health.
Dr. Edgar H. Thornton 'will leave
Portland Thursday on a three months'
trip for the benefit of his health.
His daughter. Miss Florence Pauline
Corlnne Thornton, will accompany him.
Mr. Thornton will gro by boat to San
Kranclsco and from there will take a
vessel sailing March 5. He expects to
return the middle of May.
Dr. Thornton was bitten by the same
rabies-infected dog that was responsi
ble for the death of Frank Griffith last
July. Dr. Thornton applied Iodine
rapidly to the wound, and Dr. Calvin
White telegraphed to New York for a
supply of the Pasteur serum, which ar
rived in time to prove efficacious, but
the mental strain following the death
of Mr. Griffith proved almost more than
the doctor could bear.
