DIFFERENCE AS TO VALUES
JJculc-rs look ror.Vreer Selling Be'

Needed Supplies Cheaper
J a Australia.
There seems to Be a difference of opinion
aniung grain buyer as to the value of
wheat on thla market. Some are claiming
PT cents aa the current quotation on club
and others consider 86 cents as full value
and ara limiting- their bids ts this Brare.
All this, however. Is without reckoning the
farmer, w'ho Is aa Indifferent to one price as
to the other, and has aimply withdrawn
from the market aa a Belling factor.
How long the growers will maintain this
ttltufie will be determined by later devel
Vproenta, It la believed by soma of the
ealers that with the added storage charge
a February 1 and again on March 1 and
then tax time, the farmers will not be so
"dT to hang on as they have been to
Bate. Any considerable unloading would
of course, result In lower prices being of
lerea by buyers. It Is not certain, how
ever, that there will be such a general
selling movement. xna larmers who ar
tm carrying wheat appear to be In good
financial circumstances and if the market
hould take an upward tilt the country
Banks might encourage them to hold longer.
A general weakening of the whole sltua
tion, on tho other hand, would have a dlf
Xerent effect.
As to the current demand, it Is limited
chiefly to California and the wants of
lew millers here and there. Bluestem is
the principal grade needed In the south.
European Dusiness la out of the question, as
the export basis of club Is not above 84
cents track. There Is also no chance now
cf selling wheat to Japan, although that
country's needs are undoubtedly great. Aus
trallan sellers are underbidding the raclnc
Coast and will continue to get the Orlen
tal orders unless the steamship lines cut
the rates sharply out of here.
In hla International review of the wheat
ituation Broomhal! says:
"During- the past week the market has
rallied, owing to a rovlval of the foreign
demand, particularly from the United King
dem, and this, together -with continued small
Argentine offers and the lighter shipments
from that center, hate served to advance
export bids. Further support was the re
duction in the Australian exportable sur
Plus, with a noticeable lack of pressure
from that country. The purchase of for
, eign wheat by Continental countries shows
some improvement, especially by France and
the Mediterranean countries, but the de
mand from Germany is poor. Tho prospect
for India is generally poor, but some au
thorities venture the claim that this coun
try will have possibly 16.000,000 bushels for
export. General prospective supplies are lib
eral; the decrease In Russia this week was
attributed to the holidays thero (Christmas).
It Is expected that the Danublan quantities
will continue liberal, but the closing of navi
gation may check these. In the near fu
ture It Is expected that Argentine supplies
will bo large and Australian Increase, and
also that there will bo no great reduction
In the shipments from the big exporters of
the Northern Hemisphere. Thus I expect
continued liberal supplies, but there Is no
Indication that growers are satisfied with
present prices and willing to sell at this
level."

BUTTER SELU.XG AT VARIOUS 1BICE8
Creamery men Forcing Market Don to Shut
Out New Zealand.
Various prices are being quoted on city
and country creamery butter, ranging from
60 to C2 i cents. The market is in an un
settled condition. It seems to be the pur
pose of most of the creameries to get the
price down so aa to shut out Imported but
ter. Cheese is very scarce and prices are more
or less nominal.
The egg market had a somewhat easier
undertone. Candled stocit sold on the street
ar S3 to 34 cents, and uncandled eggs were
quoted at 32 to 02 4 cents.
There was a sharp demand for all kinds
of poultry, receipts of which were fairly
large. Chickens came from points as far
distant as Union. Most of the sales were
around 16 cents. White docks sold at 16
to 37 cents. Dressed meats were unchanged.
TRADING IN OKAXGE9 IS LARGE
Fancy Apples Being Withdrawn From Stor
age Vegetables Active.
Front-street trade wan good yesterday,
considering the unsettled weather. Receipts
were light. Three or four cars of bananas
are due tonight or tomorrow morning.
There Is a temporary scarcity of head
lettuce on the street. Bell peppers are firm
and have advanced to 10 cents a pound.
Trading In oranges was particularly active
and prices held steady. Fancy apples are
feeing withdrawn from storage and are sell
ing fairly well. There Is still a consider
ably quantity of cheap stock on hand.
Hopgrowcrs Holding Firm.
No hop sales were reported yesterday at
ay point on the Coast. There was a general
tightening up by growers, particularly hold
ers of good goods.
Preliminary returns on beer sales In De
cember show an Increase of 306,000 barrels.
The Eastern markets are stronger and
state hops are now quoted one cent higher,
at 49 cents at New York.
