Ington. Dec 18. Portland enjoys the
distinction of having the most pros
perous postal savings bank In the
United States, as shown by tha annual
report of the board of trustees of the
postal savings system, recently sent to
Congress. Only three cities In the
United States have larger deposits in
their postal savings banks than Port
land New York, Chicago and Boston,
cities which greatly outrank Portland
In population.
The report of the board shows the
number of depositors and the amounts
on deposit in all the postal savings
banks of the United States on June 30.
1913, the- close of the fiscal year. On
that day Portland had 6852 depositors
and the amount on deposit was J77".
l'5t. This places Portland ahead of
all the other cities of the United
States except the three named.

Tour of State Soon.
OREGON AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE,
Corvallis, Or, Dec 20. (Special.) The
Oregon Agricultural College Cadet
Band, proclaimed by its manager to be
the best military band west of the
Mississippi River ' and the best-balanced
musical organisation ever pro
duced at the college will leave Cor
vallis Monday morning for an exten
sive concert tour through the lower
Willamette Valley and Eastern Oregon.
The. itinerary calls for 12 concerts,
and Is as follows: December 28. Al
bany; December 23, Portland: Decem
ber 24, Hood River: December 25, La
Grande, December 28, Enterprise; De
cember 27, Wallowa; December 2,
Pendleton; December 80. Heppner; De
cember 31, The Dalles; January 1, Ore
gon City; January 2. Silverton.
Captain Harry Beard has combined
with the heavier numbers on the pro
grammes the band will render at each
of the concerts a variety of lighter ma
terial. A feature this year is the Saxophone
quartet, composed of J. O- Beck, E. A.
Taylor.. P. A. Holmes, and P. F.
Bridges. Ross Johnson, a popular
singer on the O. A. C Glee Club, will
give tenor solos-

Then came what the dispatch to the
Spanish War Office described as a
"veritable rain of bombs, tossed by
hand by the airmen into the midst of

"After this bombardrpent the Spanish
infantry charged with the bayonet and
dislodged the Moors from their posi
tions, causing them to flee in great
disorder, leaving large numbers of
dead and wounded on the field.
The Spanish troops also lost a con
siderable number of men. as the rifle
fire of the tribesmen was exceedingly
accurate.

COQT7ILLE. Or, Deo. 18. (Special.)
The jury at o'clock tonight returned
a verdict of guilty In case of W. J.
Leaton. ex-Recorder of East Side, who
was under Indictment for theft of $3000
of -city's funds. The trial lasted three
days. The jury was out 13 hours. Judge
Morrow, of Portland, presided.
Leaton denied his guilt. Theft of the
funds waa revealed. after experts had
opened the East Side city safe, on" which
the combination could not be worked
for three weeks. Leaton asserted he
had placed the city's funds in the safe.
Evidence at the trial showed that Lea
ton waa a poker player and had lost
considerable auma, which war pre
sumed to be part of the East Side miss
ing funds.
Soon after the discovery of the theft
Mayor Jordan, of the East Side, com
mitted suicide, worry over the loss to
his little town driving him insane.
PROFESSORS KAY SHIFT
Harvard and Clillo Are Considering
Exchange of Instructors.

University and the University of Chile
are considering an annual exchange of
professors and students which it is ex
pexted will begin with the next aca
demics year. One professor and two stu
dents would be sent from each ; uni
versity to the other under the plan
made public here today.
Eduardo Snares, Chilean Minister
here, representing the National Uni
versity of- his country, is conducting
the negotiations with Harvard.
Dr. Carlos de Pena, Minister from
Uruguay. Is preparing to take up with
Harvard a proposal for a similar ex
change with the National University of
his country. -

tration's Philippine policy at the recent
annual dinner of the Military Order of
Carabao will result in some action by
the President.
Secretary Garrison and Secretary
Daniels joined today in- framing a re
port to President Wilson on the inci
dents of the dinner and afterward
Secretary Garrison discussed the sub
ject with the President. Later it was
announced action would be taken,
"emanating from the White House." In
the meantime neither of the secretaries
will discuss the Incident. . -
The mere announcement that there
Is to be "some action" Is said to have
caused a feeling of apprehension in
military and naval circles and there
was much speculation as to the nature
of the coming pronouncement. This
covered the whole range of possibil
ities, from court martials to personal
reprimands, and finally to an admoni
tory statement Intended to prevent a
repetition of the episodes which so
displeased President Wilson as to
cauuse him to resign honorary mem
bership in the order of the Carabao.
The weight of opinion was there
would be no attempt to single out in
dividuals for punishment, even to the
extent Involved in a criticism that
might constitute a stain on a military
record. '
CHORUS TO CAROL LAYS
Reed College. Students Will Revive
Christmas Folk gongs.
The Reed College chorus will give a
free Christmas concert tonight, begin
ning at 8 o'clock. Thd chorus appeared
in a similar concert last year, and many
of the songs rendered then will be sung.
Most of th. number are old Curia Unas
carols selected from the folk songs of
several centuries, including Bohemia,

for new members gave a banquet last
night at the City Restaurant to about
60 members of the club. Dr. J. W.
