the coming Christmas, if It were the
last Christmas you were to spend on
earth?

Christmas day on which you were to
be with them to share their JoyT
Those probably are foolish questions.
You are likely to enjoy many merry
Christmas days In health and vigor,
and really It la Inappropriate to drag
In such considerations, like a mummy
at the feast, just while one Is engrossed
with purchases and holiday plana. A
crowded store is not a good place In
which to stop and think anyhow.
There is a man In Portland, how
ever never mind his name. It's a for
eign name and hard for American
tongues to get around who has abun
dant time to think over such things at
this time, for he is not engrossed with
Christmas shopping activities.
This Christmas His Last.
The problem presents Itself to him
c.uite concretely. He will observe in
two weeks his last Christmas on earth.
He was a laborer, and lived in com
paratively comfortable circumstances
with his family until last Sprln-r, when
he was thrown under a sprinkler and
injured. In Alarch he went to the hos
pital. There he remained for several
months. Just recently, with his funds
nearly all gone and convinced that his
light for recovery of health was In vain,
he came back to his home to die.
There are a wife and Ave children In
this family, the youngest child I years
old.
To go hack to the two questions
with which this was begun, of course
he has arrived at some conclusion on
these subjects, and of course thinks it
utterly Impossible for him to hope to
see his wish fulfilled, foe he has not
money for the sheer necessities of life
even, to say nothing of the little gifts
and dainties with which one makes
Christmas distinctive
There is, however, something- that
has been at work In this Christmas
season of which he knows nothing, and
because of this he really Is to find
some of his wishes coming true for the
last Christmas he shall celebrate.

, Christmas relief fund of the Associated
Charities the other day and then for

Or perhaps it is the check you Intend
to send tomorrow for the fund.
The Christmas relief fund has al
ready passed the 17u0 mark and will
he close about the 1 1000 mark by Mon
day, according to the indications from
the letters that are being received at
the office of the Charities. In addition
to the money that is coming in several
barrels of flour, much clothing and
other supplies are being- sent In dally.
last year more than 150 families
were given Christmas cheer and were
helped during the Winter months by
the relief fund that was contributed,
and this year the scope of the work
will be far larger.
Secretary V. R. Manning his organ
ized his force of workers carefully to
cope with the Christmas situation and
the work will be carried forward with
enthusiasm during the Christmas week.
The contributions should come In as
early as possible, so that during the
last week It may be known just what
means the Associated Charities has at
hand to care for the cases that It takes
charge of.

microbe that may be transferred from
one pair of lips to another has been
brought to bay at last at the University
of Oregon, at least so far as the big
class dances are concerned. Since kiss
ing was declared highly dangerous by
scientists several years ago, college
swains have still had recourse to Ben
Jonson's famous plea, "leave a kiss,
but in the cup," for heretofore at dances
a man has had the privilege of drink
ing punch from the same glass as his
fair partner, should he so desire.
However, even this second-hand form
of osculation is now taboo. Professor
John Bovardof the science department,
has asserted that the opportunity for
bacteria to migrate via the brim of an
ordinary punch glass is fully as great
as by the-mora direct route. Through
his efforts 10.000 individual drinking
cups of papier-mache have been pur-chase-1
Dy the university. A Mlpply of
these will be used for the first time
at the annual sophomoro hop tomorrow
evening.

be held at the Church of St. Michael and
All Angels, Broadway and East
Thirty-eighth streets. North, today,
Sunday and Monday. It will be con
ducted by Rev. Henry Russell Talbot
and Rev. Frederick K. Howard, mem
bers of the social service committee of
the Episcopal Church In the Diocese of
Oregon. The object of the conference

and arouse the duty of co-operation for

MRS. M0ISAN IS DEAD
Pioneer Woman, Aged 4, Passes at
-Son's Home, Brooks, Or.
News has just been received here of
the death on December 4 of Mrs. Har
riet Molsan. one of the oldest native
daughters of the Paclflo Northwest, at
the home of her eldest son, V. X. Mol
san. near Brooks. Marlon County, Or.
The funeral of the pioneer, who was
more than 94 years of age, was held
from the Catholic Church at Brooks,
which was built on land donated by the
Molsans more than. 30 years ago. last
Saturday morning. Interment was In
the Gervala Cemetery.
Mrs. Molsan was born May 11, 1810,
at Vancouver, 'Wash. Her father re
moved to- Champoeg. When 16 years
old she was married to Thomas Molsan,
a French Canadian, of Montreal-
The couple took up homesteads in the
Lake La. Blche country. 10 miles north
east of Salem. In time they acquired
about S50 acres of this land, which Is
now in the hands of the three ohlkiren,
P. X. and Alexander Molsan and Mrs.
Phileroena Bolter.
The Rev. Fathers Moore and Mare, of
Salem, assisted the local pastor in the
services at the funeral, which was at
tended by large numbers. The choir
from the Salem Catholic Church sang
the high mass. "Grandpa" Molsan died
at the homestead January IS, 1(88.

The administration of Multnomah
County spent $931.41 more In Novem
ber. U13. than in the corresponding
month last year, according to a com
parative table furnished the County
Commissioners yesterday by Auditor
Martin. The total for November was
123.481.37.

PAVING PLAN PROPOSED
Commissioners to Hold Meeting Mon
day With Companies.
To arrange A new system whereby
the city can require the repair of pav
ing without delay by contractors dur
ing the years the paving Is under
maintenance by the contractor. City
Commissioners Dieck, Blgelow and
Daly and representatives of the paving
companies will hold a meeting at the
City Hall Monday' morning. .
It Is proposed by Commissioner
Dieck to arrange a system whereby
the maintenance bonds of the compa
nies can be so changed that the re
pairs can be ordered when actually
needed Instead of the work being done
when the contractor gets ready, as has
been the experience In the past. In
the repair of paved areas which are
torn up for underground structures
Commissioner Dleck proposes a grad
uated scale of pay for the companies
based upon the length of time required
for the work.
CELEBRATION' IS ALLOWED
Rotary Club Gets Permit for Christ
mas Tree in Broadway.
The City Commission yesterday
granted a permit to the Rotary Club to
hold a celebration Christmas eve on
Oak street and Broadway. A commit
tee of the club, headed by George L.
Baker, appeared before the Commission
and asked permission to use the street
for a huge illuminated Christmas tree
and for the erection of a platform and
seats for singers and others who are
to take part in the celebration.
Permission was granted to block the
street for the evening and to allow
those witnessing the event to congre
gate in the streets surrounding the
scene.
CAR' PORTER GETS 35 DAYS
Negro Employe of Xorth Bank Road
Sentenced for Theft.
Harry Johnson, a negro car porter,
who was arrested by Charles Bakcsy,
special agent of the North Bank road,
and was charged with the larceny of
linen and blankets from parked cars In
the railroad yards, was yesterday given
85 days on the rock pile by Municipal
Judge Stevenson.
Johnson has an extensive record in
cities of the Pacific Coast. He was ar
rested In San Francisco for vagrancy.
In San Jose as a murder suspect, in
Los Angeles for larceny. In San Diego
for the same offense and in Marysvllle
and Bakerstield for vagrancy.

Citizens of Second Ward Meet to De
mand Selection of Site.
ST. JOHNS, Or, Dec 12. (Special)
A meeting of citizens of the Second
Ward was held Wednesday night at
the City Hall to urge that a park
site be selected for the northern part

G. L Perrlne presided at the meeting
and spoke in behalf of the citizens of
the Second Ward. A meeting in the
First Ward probably will be held next
week to suggest a park site there.

directed iir. Jackson to prepare the
necessary requisition for the supplies

A requisition was allowed for the
purchase of eight two gallon Babcock
lire extinguishers for use at the farm.
Mr. Jackson said be has taken every
precaution to be prepared to protect
the inmates of the farm should a lire
occur, it not being practical to have tire
drills because of the nervous condi
tion of many of the patients.

Operating expenses on the new Co
lumbia River highway have amounted
to $11,842.29 to date, according to a
report made yesterday by C. B. Pum-
phry. timekeeper and bookkeeper of
the construction work at Camp No. 1,
Tiear MlHnomah Falls. Of this amount,

COUNTY PRECINCTS DIVIDED
Divisions Read for Approval of
Board of Commissioners.
When the County Commissioners ap
prove the redlvlslon of the election
precincts of Multnomah County, as
made by County Clerk Coffey and Dep
uty Assessor- Funk, there -will be 32
precincts in the county. Instead of only
192 as heretofore. The work was com
pleted by Mr. Coffey and Mr. Funk yes
terday. The law under which the new divi
sion was made was passed at the last
session of the Legislature. It requires
that there shall be not more than 800
voters in any preMncL Because of the
women being entitled to vote, there
was hardly a precinct In the city ot
Portland that did not have more than
300 voters.
