Anders Highland, whose father's estate was closed nearly ten years ago, will be al lowed to reopen the matter and have an accounting of the rents and profits since the death of his father In 1897. according to a decision handed down yesterday by Circuit Judge John 8. Coke, who is hoMlnp court In Judge Morrow's department. Highland charged that while he and his slater were In Norway, Ole Tollison. his brother-in-law and administrator of his father's estate, defrauded the children of Mr. Highland out of property, valued now he ssys at about Mooo. The property was purchased by L. Highland, shortly before his death, it is said, for 1600. Anders Hlfthland through conveyance from his three slaters, claims four sixths of the estate. Still defiant of the prediction of rain from the Weather Office every day for the past five days, the pleasant weather continued to occupy the stage again yesterday. The sky was rot free from clouds, but there was none of the rain that had been predicted. It is thought that tomorrow a full week of fair weather may be completed, although the Weather Bureau has again hung out the "rainy" prediction. Daniel J. Haines Dies. Daniel J. Haynes. a veteran of the Civil Wa. died at his home. 295 East Forty second street. December 4. at the age of 69 years. During the Civil War he was a member of Company F. Twenty sixth Kentucky Infantry, and was a member of Lincoln-Garfield Post, No 2. G. A. R. The funeral will be he!d today at 1 P. M. from Flnley's chapel, end the interment will be made in the O. A. Sealed verdict for the defendunt was returned yes'.erday In the ense of Beatrice Hamnett against the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company, in which Miss liamnett had sued for $20,000. She charged that her back was injured and several vertebrae were displaced when she was thrown from a car near the corner of Mason and Dekum avenues. The accident occurred last March. Holly Thefts Beoin. Along with the first letter to Santa Claus. the first theft of holly of the pre-Chrintmas sea son occurred yesterday, when Mrs. Charles Kamm, of 215 Fourteenth street, reported to the police that boys were stealing holly from the rear lot of her home property. Coleman, of Reed College, will give the fifth of his series of lectures on "The Earlier Prophets," In the T. M. C A. at 12:30 today. The subject of the lecture will be "The Voice From the Country; the People ar.d the Land." The object of these lectures Is to prove that the old prophecies have a message for to day. There is no charge for admis sion. Sellwood Has New Librarian. Mrs. Alice Jones is the new librarian in charge of "he Sellwood Branch Li brary. Mrs. Jones formerly was con nected with the Central Library, but more recently was with the library at Cottage Grove. She will move to Sell wood. Miss Ruth Crocker, who had been librarian, has taken charge of the new South Portland Branch Li brary. Park Ronds to Be Considered. The Sunnyslde Improvement Club and Parent-Teacher Circle bas called a mass meeting for Monday evening, in the auditorium of the Sunnyslde school. Several husbands are serving time on the rock pile, having pleaded guilty. Simon Is the first to be found guilty by A Jury. Norton, who Is accounted a mechani cal genius, has circulated advertising In which he contracted to supply burg lar alarms to stores and homes under a new mechanical electric system devised by himself. Much of the tools neces sary to construct the alarms were identified by others as their property. Establishing Norton's claim to me chanical ingenuity, It was discovered yesterday by the detectives that Norton devised and installed the electrla warn ing and door-closing systems In use in the gambling dens in Portland's China, town, which have defied the efforts of the police to permanently put out of business, though portions of walla, doors and fittings have been removed bodily In the effort Norton was convicted Thursday In Municipal Court of the theft of 117 worth of fine hardwood from the Emer son Hardwood Company, of Twenty third and Nlcolal streets. The mate rial taken was a special order, and easily identified. He refused to defend himself and took a 80-day sentence without uttering a word of protest or defense. Norton was a member of Engine Com pany No. 6.
