OFFICIAL FREE METHODIST Though of Pronounced Faith, Form, er Acting Chief Says He Will Xot Liabor in Strict Conjunc tion With Any Belief. From police captain to rellslous evangelist Is the step that A. E. Slover, ex-acting chief of police of Portland, will take withing the next few months, probably after the first of the year. Captain Slover has been considering this change of vocation for quite a while. His friends, who know of his Interest In religion, are not surprised at his plans. "I have Just grown weary of this po lice work," said Slover yesterday. "I value men more than money, and feel that I can do more good as an evan gelist." Mayor Hears News. About two weeKs ago he told Mayor Albee of his plans. The time when he can reasonably resign from the depart ment has not been determined. Just where hs will go and the exact time are all matters that future circum stances must determine. "I know the neighborhood where I want to begin my work," he said, "but perhaps some better man will have taken up the work there before I can prepare. I can only say now that It is & country settlement near Portland, where the people are religious, but not properly organized. "In regard to the time, I want to get out of this as soon as I can. I am sick of it. I can say definitely that 1 will not be connected with the police department for more than a year, and perhaps not more than six months." Slover Is Free Methodist. Slover says that, although he is a Free Methodist himself, he will not work In strict conjunction with any creed. He says that he thinks that he BUSINESS EMPLOYMENT AGENTS. "It is no more possible, said Slover, "for a great preacher to come Into a community for a few days and do all the good that his abilities deserve than it it for a farmer to go out and cut a field of good grain on an uncultivated prairie. Someone must first prepare the ground, and that Is the capacity In which I intend to exert myself." Slover has been connected with this form of work before. At one time ho had charge of a mission In Stephens Addition, where he did work that was considered successful. Speaking of Slover's intended resig nation last night. Mayor Albee said: "Slover told me that he was thinking of taking up this work. I told him that it was a noble work and advised him to go ahead ELECTRIC RAT TRAP WINS Tacoma Wharfmaster Ijevlea Heavy Toll on Rodents. TACOMA, Wash., Oct 22.
