LOAN SHARKS' WAYS TOLD
Victims W ill Bo Aided by Remedial
Association Soon.
Manager Hamblen, of the Portland
Remedial Loan Association, the financ
ing of which is being promoted by the
Progressive Business Men's Club,
thinks he soon will have enough mate
rial to write "Tales of a Wayside Loan
Office," so many stories of distress are
related every day at the temporary or
flce of the association, 412 Commercial
block, by men and women who are in
the hands of loan sharks.
A man who called at the office of the
loan association yesterday said he had
borrowed $90 on a pair -of diamond ear
rings. Be has been paying 15 per cent
Interest a month, the Interest Is paid
to date, but the lender now demands
that the loan be taken up at once and
the man Is not In position to do so. He
has paid $13.50 interest a month for
five months and still owes the prin
cipal. This and other cases will be taken
tip by the loan association and the loan
assumed by the association as soon as
the $50,000 fund for capitalization is
completed. Subscriptions are received
by Wilfrid P. Jones, Merchants Nation
al Bank; Robert S. Howard. Ladd &
Tilton Bank; V. R. Manning, Asso
ciated Charities; James Hamblen, 412

VON KLEIN CASE UP TODAY
Proceedings Shifted to Salem Before
Supreme Court.
Deputy District Attorney McGulre
will go to Salem today to appear be
fore the Supreme Court in the proceed
ings In which Judge Morrow is directed
to show cause wny the Indictments
against E. E. C. Von Klein should not
be dismissed. Judge Morrow refused
to dismiss the Indictments when the
matter was brought up In his court on
motion of Von Klein's attorneys, who
charged that the state had failed to
give Von Klein a hearing as provided
by law.
When the date for the trial arrived
the state's witnesses were not to be
found and the court set the case over
until October 20. It was because of
this continuance that a dismissal of the
indictment was urged.
