Alder FIRE DANGERS REDUCED TIMBER GUARDS MAKE GOOD RECORD FOR 1913. State, Government and Private. Pro tective Agencies to Hold Con ference in Canada. A total destruction ol timber by fire of only about 3,000,000 feet worth less than 15000, against the previous lowest record of 26.000,000 feet In 1911, Is the record of the Pacific Coast Forest Pro tective Associations, which patrol more than 20,000,000 acres from the Montana Rockies to Northern California, con taining; one-fifth of the Nation's entire timber supply, according to reports complied yesterday by the Western For estry and Conservation Association for the season up to September 30, usually considered the end of serious fire dan ger. State and Government protective agencies report equal success. There has been practically no loss In the Na tional forests. Damage to logs and camp equipment by slashing fires also Is the lowest on record, Deing esti mated at 310.000. The year Is reported to have been much safer than 1902 and 1910 and per haDa a little safer than 1911. but worse than 1912. and about like the average of other years in the past. About Zoou fires worthy of report were extin srutshed by the combined patrol forces. The Western Forestry and Conserva tion Association regards 1913 as a test year which shows protective facilities now perfected to a point which, to gether with greater care by public, loggers and railroads practically In sures safety In the normal season. It Is announced today that all pri vate, state and Government forest pro tective agencies in the Western United States and Canada will hold a forest fire conference In Vancouver, B. C. De cember 16 and 16. to discuss patrol and fire fighting methods and particularly plans for close co-operation in 1914. CLASSIFIED AD. RATES Dally or Sunday.
