Superintendent Churchill Says Top les Will Not Be Assigned, but May Be Introduced at Will. SAL.EM. Or. SeDt- 26. (SpeclaL) A. Churchill, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and chairman of a committee of seven named by the Com- mnnwealth Conference to discuss A proposed readjustment of educational matters In Oregon, announced last night that be had called a meeting; of the committee to be held In his office Oc tober 3. Regarding the questions for discussion Mr. CburchiU said: "After thinking the matter over I concluded not to assign topics to cer tain members of the committee for dis cusslon with a statement In a letter that I shall send to each that we bhall take up for discussion any subject that any member of the committee aesires to present." The questions are aa fol lows: "First What are vital matters that need to be ascertained in the conditions as they exist in Oregon's educational system throughout the state and In all Its institutions, and how proceed to reveal them- most clearly and fully? "Second With regard to our teach ing force are our provisions for train ing and testing efficiency Ideal? "Third Do we proceed in the best way in selecting our teachers and In providing salaries and tenure? "Fourth Should the present school term in Oregon be lengthened? "Fifth What plan is most feasible for Increasing Oregon's Btate school fund?" The Commonwealth Conference was held under the auspices of the Univer sity of Oregon, and a resolution adopt ed by It provides that a committee of seven shall act as auxiliary to the Oregon Citizenship Educational League and the People's League of Higher Kd ucation. The other members of the committee are as follows: P. L. Camp bell, -president of the University of Oregon; W. J. Kerr, Oregon Agricul tural College; L. R. Alderman, super intendent of the Portland schools; E. f. Slsson, of Reed College, and J. R Wilson, superintendent of the Portland Academy. Eugene Brookins, president, and John C. Veatch will represent the Ore gon Citizens' Educational League; E. Hofer. president, and Theodore J. Geis ler will represent the People's Higher Educational League and J. E. Libby. president, and H. Heavy rains have fallen In the West Gulf States- and lighter amounts are reported from stations In the Middle Mississippi valley and in .portions ot tne Lake Region. It is much warmer In South ern California. Wyoming, Northern Colorado, Southern Montana, the Dakotas. Minnesota and Iowa and decidedly cooler In the lower Lake Region and Ohio Valley.
