Housewife Boycotts Water
Meter and Cheats Self
Commodity Does Double Duty at
Vancouver, Resulting In Triple
Price Being Paid to Corporation.
VANCOUVER, Wash., Sept. 21. (Spe
cial.) Just now, the Washington
Oregon Corporation Is experiencing the
difficulty usually met of overcoming,
prejudice against installing water me
ter. In the city, and many amusing In-.
cidents occurred.
One German woman, after the meter
was installed, formed the habit of car
rying all ot the wash-water and dish
water out on- the lawn to water her
flowers and rose bushes. On Monday,
when she washes, she Industriously
waters the lawn with the water that
has done service tn divorcing dirt from
the clothes.
With great difficulty, one family was
Induced to install a meter The reason
was discovered. The good housewife,
desiring to economize on ice, had fixed
the sink so that she could keep her
butter, eggs, milk and cream in it, and
had a constant stream of water flowing
through to keep the edibles cool. If
she had been compelled to pay for the
amount of water she used. It probably
would have cost her $10 a mouth.
One man persisted in the Idea that a
water meter measured air and that he
would be compelled to pay for such
ozone as should pass through the de
vice. He gained this information on
learning that air passed - through the
pipes after the pressure had been so
low that no water could be drawn from
a faucet. A meter will not turn when
air Is paeslng through, but the man be
lieved it would and would not Install
one.
Thirty cents is the rate charged for
1000 gallons of water, with a minimum
charge of $1. At tbe endof the first
month the German woman learned that
she had used only 1800 gallons of water
and was angry because she did not use
a full dollar's worth of the commodity.
