RABBI VOICES PROTEST
BIBLE IX PCBLilO SCHOOLS WILL
BE OPPOSED.
Proposal Declared to Bo Attempt
Toward Tyranny lu Religious
Matters.
Emphatic opposition to the proposal
-of reading- the Bible In the public
schools was voiced In an address before
his congregation last Friday evening
by Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, of Temple
I Beth Israel. Ho viewed the plan as an
Injustice to those Americans whose re
; llglous beliefs do not conform in every
particular to the teachings of the Bible,
and branded It as an attempted form
of tyranny, against which he urges the
Jewish people to protest.
The proposal that the Bible be read
in the public schools Is dangerous and
. short-si ghtea," he said. "The constitu
tion of our state and county provides
sxpllcltly and implicitly for absolute
religious freedom. This means freedom
to be religious as well as to be Irre
ligious. "Since this book is the acknowledged
basis of religion, any general public
ijbs of It is an imposition of some spe-
' clal system of church propaganda. Such
an act, therefore, is a distinct violation
; of our contract as citizens to support
a non-sectarian school system, and is a
distinct violation of political rights.
This has been passed on in several state
Supreme Courts. Wisconsin has decided
It notably.
"We who oppose this step take no
ground of choice of version, translation
or even what Bible; be it the Old Tes
tament, acceptable to Jews; the Old
and New, used by Christians; the Koran
of the Mussulmans, or any of the sa
cred books of religious societies. That
Christians form a majority of our pop
ulation is a fact, but we assume, with
Justice, that willful oppression of a
minority by a majority. In our society.
Is a tyranny repellant to the letter and
spirit of our fundamental political con
tract. Upon this we base our protest
and propose to support with our most
loyal efforts the government principles
which promise justice, happiness and
freedom to American citizens.
