loop on Third and Yamhill streets, will
run up Morrison ot Fifth, south on Fifth
Ao Yamhill, east on Yamhill to Third
and north to Morrison. '
This system will Increase the Inter
urban service and the service to all
districts south of Hawthorne avenue on I
the East Side. The Hawthorne avenue,
ellwood, , Woodstock, Mount. Scott,
Waverly - Richmond, Woodmere and
Moreland cars will proceed over the
Hawthorne bridge to Second street,
north on Seoond to Yamhill, east to
First street and south to the Haw
thorne bridge. This will save the pres

SACK RUSH OPENS REED
College Starts Year With 185 Reg

Reed College opened Monday for
Its third year. About 185 students reg
istered. The rooms In the dormitory
are nearly all filled.
All day Monday and yesterday the
students registered and held confer
ences with the instructors. Monday
evening a bonfire was built on the ath
letic field and a general "mixer" fol
lowed, where the new students were In
troduced to the old ones and to each
other: The big event of the evening
was the "sack-rush" between the fresh
men and' sophomore classes.
The two sides came 'together with
a oraab and for 15 mnlutea each sack
became the center of a struggling
group. The contest was exciting. When
the whistle blew each side had one
sack. To break the tie one sack was
placed in the center of the field; the
sophomires won, but at the end the
sack was in the possession of Kenneth J
Earle, a freshman.

FRANK L. SMITH ACQUITTED
Butcher Says He Win Not Keep
Meats Under Cover.
Though all the defense made by
Frank L. Smith, meat shop owner, as to
his having meat on display without
proper covering was that he did not
and would not comply with the law,
a jury of six business men In Munici
pal Court yesterday pronounced him
not guilty.
Evidence was produced before Judge
Stevenson that Smith's meat was ex
posed In opposition to the law, which
provides for covering from flies and
dirt. Mr. Smith did not contend that he
had been negligent, but stated that he
did not and would not cover the meat.
On the first ballot the Jury Is said
to have been four to two for acquittal,

E. H. SMITH GETS VERDICT
Inventor ' Awarded Large Damages
Against John W. Hnrley,
Edward H. Smith, a paralytic who
accused John W. Hurley, a promoter
with offices in the Henry building,
with practically beating him out of his
Invention, an Improved monkey wrench.
was given Judgment for J8150 against
Hurley by Judge McGinn yesterday.
This is half the sum for which the
plaintiff charged Hurley sold the patent
rights less $3t0 previously paid, to
Smith by Hurley.
Unable to market ot finance his in
vention Smith gave Hurley a half in
terest for $10 on Hurley's promise
to dispose of the patent rights at a
good price. Later Hurley purchased
the second half for $350, telling Smith
that the Invention could not be . sold
and was worthless. At that time, ac
cording to the court's findings, he had
already sold the patent rights for
$17,000.
Judge McGinn confirmed Hurley In
ownership of the patent land left him
In undisturbed possession of his own
half but decreed that he should pay
Smith what he received for the other
half.
INCREASE OF PAY IS ASKED
County Bridge Builders' Request In-
' dorsed by Murnane.
M. J. Murnane, county superintend
ent of bridges and ferries, yesterday
notified the County 'Commissioners that
county employes belonging to the
Piledriving and Wooden Bridge Build
ers' Union are demanding an Increase
of pay from $5 to $6 a day for foremen
and $3.60 to $4 a day for carpenters.
He recommended that the Increases be
granted; also that laborers In the coun
ty employ be increased from $2.59 to
$3 a day.
' Mr. Murnane saya that he has Inter
viewed private interests employing
members of this nnion and has found
them willing to allow the raises in pay
asked. Tba report was referred back
to him for farther details, narticularly ,
as to the number of men belonging to
this union who are on the county pay
roll, where they are working and so
forth.
