PORTLAND GROWTH NOTED
Bnslness Conditions Improving, Says
Eastern Kallroad Official.
That' business conditions In and
about Portland have been Improving In
the last few months, was the opinion
expressed by G. t Estabrook. of Phila
delphia, secretary and assistant treas
urer of the Portland Railway. Light
Power Company, who has been in the
city for two weeks, making an inspec
tion of the property of the company.
Mr. Estabrook Is one of the chief as
sistants of C. XI. Clark, chairman of
the executive board of the company,
and has a reputation as a keen ob
server as well as an able financier.
XIr. Clark is in Europe, and Mr. Esta
brook's trip to Portland is for the pur
pose of securing a personal view of
conditions here.
"After being In Portland for two
rks." said Mr. Estabrook, "I am
agreeably surprised to find that busi
ness here is showing a marjcea im
provement. I must say that there has
been no apparent let-up In the build
ing In Portland of skyscrapers and
structures of a metropolitan nature.
All this is pleasing, and goes to show
that Portland people have faith in their
convictions of the city becoming a me
tropolis. I am convinced that Portland
has got to grow up to its present di
mensions, but that is only natural and
is more or less a condition which con
fronts all of the cities which have
shown such marvelous strides during
the past decade."

yesterday.

NEW CARLINE IS SOUGHT
East Halsey-Street Residents Raise
Fund to Help In Construction.
The Portland Railway, Light & Powm
er Company has been asked by tho East
HaJsey. Street Improvement Association
to build an electric railway on East
Halsey street from the Sandy boulevard
and East Thirty-seventh street to East
Eighty-second street. Property owners
and residents of ' that district have
raised and offered a cash bonus of JI8,
500 as part of the cost of construction
of this line. The extension will be
nearly two miles long, and the cost is
estimated at about 137,000.
According to the statistics there are
now 850 families immediately tributary
to the proposed extension, or between
3000 and 4000 people, who most walk an
average of one mile to reach either the
Montavllla or the Rose City car lines.
Offer of the money was made to the
street railway company several day
ago, but no answer has yet been received.

gives them two hours at this place.
The delegation is composed of busi
ness men from Centralis, Chehalis,
Hoquiam, South Bend, Tacoma, Monte
sano and .Aberdeen. . The party has a
special tran of six or eight Pullmans.
The meeting at Goldendale will occupy
two days and Iho special will go to
Pendleton for one day at the Roundup
before starting home.
PARK COMMITTEE NAMED
6t. Johns Officials to Select Sites for
Public Playgrounds.
ST. JOHN'S, Or., Sept. 9. (Special.)
Mayor Charles Bredeson, City Attorney
O. J. Gatzmyer, representing the city,
and D. C Lewis, representing St. Johns
Commercial Club, are the committee
which will select the four tracts for
parks and playgrounds from the ten
ders which are being made by property
owners. Sealed tenders will be re
ceived till next Tuesday, September 15,
when they will be opened at the city
hall.
These tenders must show number of
acres, location and price. From these
the committee will select four tracts.
When cost and location of the selected
parks are known a special election will
be called. Under the charter a two
thirds majority is required to author
ize a bond issue, but it Is thought a
bond issue for playgrounds will carry.
"I am much in favor of four play
grounds," said Mayor Bredeson today,
"and favor selecting four tracts, which
will supply all sections of St. Johns.
I am hopeful that a playground bond
issue will carry. Of course there will
be some opposition, but I am sure that
the people of St. Johns, who realize
the need of these four playgrounds, or
parks, will give the measure their sup
port. Schools will reopen next Monday.
Pupils attending the grado schools will
be supplied with books. However,
pupils attending the high grade schools
must furnish their own books.
Clerk Tanch said today he looked
for an enrollment of from 800 to 900
pupils. There are 30 teachers.

and when a young man came to Amer
ica, locating in Iowa. About SO years
ago he settled at Grants Pass and 14
years later went to Gresham, where ha
successfully conducted a farm upon
which he resided until ha was stricken
with his final sickness. He was 63
years old.
Mr. Uhlig is survived by his widow
and five children, Mrs. Otto Ruedy,
Mrs. Charles Husman, Mrs. Lawrence
Therkelsen, Herman Uhlig and Paul
Uhlig, all of Portland.
