BY BOSCOE FAWCETI.
Even as It Is a long and dusty turn
pike that hath no turn, so It is a won
drous baseball team which wins not a
single game of a series. Such were
the weighty ponderlngs of the Sacra
mento Senators as they took the field
against Portland yesterday, and, turn
ing to. they won both games of a double-header,
breaking a disastrous los
ing streak which lasted through seven
consecutive beatings.
The score of Uie, morning game,
played before 1800 fans, was 9 to 2;
the score of the afternoon game, wit
nessed by 6000 fans, was 7 to 6. The
Senators are back in the first division.
Portland sluggers again trampled un
ceremoniously over three of Wolver
ton's star moundmen, driving Stroud,
Klawitter and Williams out of the box
in the two engagements, but the in
ability or Krause and Higgtnbotham to
hold the visitors in check in the ma
tutinal game, and the rout of Gene
Krapp in the afternoon, conspired to
offset the good work of the McCredie
sluggers.
Catcher Bliss, of Sacramento, suf
fered a split finger in the afternoon
and will be out for a fortnight.
Klawitter la Bumped Again.
Krause and Stroud battled In a 1-1
death grapple in the morning game for
five Innings, but -.Wolvcrton had to
yank Stroud in favor of Klawitter in
the sixth.
Klawitter lasted just one and one
third innings and then four hits, one a
homo run into the centerfield bleach
ers by Krause, put him to the cleaners
for the third time this series. The
score at the time was 4-2 in favor of
Sacramento, so Klawitter gets credit
for the game.
Kinsella went the rest of the route
like the champion of the universe.
Southpaw Harry fell by the wayside in
the seventh, when two walks and con
secutive hit by Toung, Van Buren and
Tennant scored three men and clinched
the game, and. Incidentally, gave Kla
witter credit for his ill-earned victory.
McCredie sent Higginbotham out In
tile eighth but the game was lost and,
anyway. Hlg proved pretty soft pick
ings while he was gunning.
It finished 9 to 2 with the solons on
the gunning end of IS safe hits, to
eight for Portland.
In the afternoon quarrel Gene Krapp
appeared first In the picture pitching
against the $10,000 beauty. Kanaka
Williams. For the second time this
series the Beavers knocked the "whey"
out of the Ha-whey-an begging a lit
tle poetic license. Johnny has looked
like three carats instead of -1 during
this series. His face value at the local
banks is about three ciphers shy of
Woiverton's f. o. b. quotations to the
majors.
Bill Speas really sewed the game up
for Portland. 4-2. in the fifth Inning,
when he drove in Charbourne and
Krapp by a nifty poke to right field.
But Gene Krapp blew with a sound like
a boiler explosion in the seventh inning
and three walks and four hits produced
five runs and several thousand head
aches. That made , it 7-4 in Sacramento's
favor.
Manager McCredie left "Gene in to
suffer the entire bombardment, ""ad
though the game little apltballer
couldn't have located the plate with the
aid of the biological survey.
Ran la Forced la.
One. of the runs was forced in by
Krapp and another was presented by
Gus Fisher, when he interfered with
Tennant on a 3-2 count. The bases
were full at the time with two out, so
there was no exouse for undue haste or
excitement on Gus' part.
L'mpire Finney's decision added a lit
tle zest of novelty to the uproar so
perhaps it was all for the best.
Southpaw Stanley finished the last
couple of innings without allowing a
hit.
Lively relieved Williams in the box
for Sacramento In the seventh stanza
and was prodded for one run in the
eighth on hits by Speaa ami Dome.
Cheek caught the last seven Innings
after the injury to Bliss.
Both teams departed last night for
the South. Portland meets Oakland and
then San Francisco, returning home for
the final three weeks' play In the
north, September 16, with Venice fur
nishing opposition. Sacramento tackles
the slipping Angels at Sacramento this
week.
