Groveland Improvements Discussed.
Improved car service, better fire pro
tection and a system of uniform trees
In Groveland Park were subjects of
consideration at a meeting; Wednesday
night of the Groveland Park Improve
ment Club held at the home of C. G.
Field on East Fifty-fourth and East
Lincoln streets. It Is proposed among
other things to adopt one particular
variety of trees and to plant them In
the parking strips throughout the dis
trict. This will be done after the com
pletion of the paving of the district,
which will oe under way within the
next few weeks.
Head Camp Deleoates Will Report.
The managers and campaign com
mittee. Including J. C. Jones, F. J.
Meln-dl, A. L. Keenan. M. D. George,
Captain Cooley and his team, who at
tended the session of the head camp,
Woodmen of the World, at Colorado
Springs, will give a report of the ses
sion tonight rt the meeting of Multno
mah camp. East Sixth street. Light
refreshments will be served. The degree
team of Multnomah camp carried off
third prise in the. National contest.
Full reports of the session will be glren
by delegates at the meeting tonight.
BrrncRETB admitted, is Competition.
At a special adjourned meeting of the
City Commission yesterday proceedings
were commenced for the paving of the
Groveland Park district on the East
Side. The City Engineer will draw
plans and specifications admitting to
competition for the first time a type of
paving known as "Bltucrete." The pro
ceedlngs will be rushed through as
rapidly as possible so that the paving
can be laid before the rainy season
sets In.
Mcseum to Get Specimen's. City
Curator Sleeth was informed yester
day that the National Museum has
shipped a collection oi mouusKs,
crustaceans and fossil vertebrates to
be placed In the Portland museum at
the City HaiL we collection win in
elude many kinds of shells and cell for
mation taken from the ocean by Gov
ernment dredges. Curator Sleeth asked
for the collection through Kepresenta
tive Lafferty about a month ago.
Mtstirious Auto Accident Scented.
Traces of a mysterious accident were
' found at the side of the Llnnton road.

in the form of an overturned automo
bile, which had caught fire and -burned.
No traces of any personal Injuries
were found, and it Is supposed that the
party in the car at the time escaped
and found their way to the city. Own
ership of the car was not traced.
Court Depttt Named. At the request
of District Judges Jones, Bell and Day
ton an order was made yesterday by
the County Commissioners appointing
E. J. Carr a deputy In the District
Court office. The judges said that work
had accumulated so as to require the
services of an additional clerk. Mr.
Carr formerly was connected with the
office and his appointment was re
quested by the judges.
Neighborhood Organises Fire Com.
pant. Citizens of Gray"a CroFnlcg in
the Mount Scott district will meet to
night to complete the organization of
a volunteer tire company. Petitions
have been circulated asking the City
Commissioner to supply the volunteers
with apparatus.

Fire Companies to Move. Under a
rearrangement of fire stations as
worked out by Acting nre umei laua
enklaus, engine company 11 now oc
cupying a shed at the foot of Stark
street will move Into the new station in
the new city Jail building on or before
September 10. Headquarters station on
Fourth street, near Morrison will move
to a tent on the Market block, while
Fourth street is being- torn up lor the
new railroad tracks of the Southern
Pacific Engine company No. 4, which
occupies the Market block tent at pres
ent, will move into the new fire sta
tion being completed this week at
Fofrth and Montgomery streets.
Photographic Record to Be Kept.
To have on file a set of photographs
showing the development of city im
provement projects. City Commissioner
Dleck has arranged for the purchase of
a camera to be used by employes of
the city's blue print department. Pic
tures will be taken of all Improvements
under way, for use in law suits, for
display purposes and lor other pur
poses which may arise. The Commis
sion yesterday refused to adopt an oral
nance appropriating the money lor the
machine, but announced that no objec
tion would be made to Mr. Dleck pur
chasing the machine with city's funds
at his disposal.
Rev. Mr. Kemmer to Lecture. Dr.
Alfred Kemmer. of Oakland, Cal.. who
spoke at T. M. C. A. last Sunday arter
noon. will deliver an Illustrated lecture
at 7:45 next Sunday In the auditorium
of the Rose City Park Clubhouse, Sandy
boulevard and East Fifty-seventh
street North, under the auspices of the
Rose City Park Methodist Episcopal
Church. Dr. Kemmer's subject will be
"Christ In Art" and it will be Illustrated
by nearly 100 reproductions of the
European masterpieces, Raphael.

Oregon Pioneer Dies. Murray A.
Wade, an Oregon pioneer who died at
Gervais Tuesday, was born near Lin
coln villa. Me.. March 17. 1830. In 1855
he came to California via the isthmus
of Panama. Two years later he came
to Parkersvllle near Gervais. In 1860
he married Jane Webb, a native of
Indiana, who crossed the plains with
her parents In 1847. He Is survived
by his widow, a son, Frank Wade, and
two daughters, Ida Wade and Minnie
Siegmund.

The United States Civil Service Com
mission announces that on September
10 the following examination will be
held In this city: Veterinarian (male)
for position In the United States quar
termaster corps, Philippine Islands at
31200 per annum. Persons desiring to

picnickers from the Jefferson-street
station at :45 o'clock In the morning.
They will return on trains at 5 and at

Pioneer Woman's Funeral Held.
The funeral' of Mrs. Rebecca Meyer, a
Dloneer of 1847, was held yesterday
afternoon from the home of her daugh
ter, Mrs. George Gradt, on Columbia
Slough. Interment was In the Masonlo
Cemetery, on the Slough road. Mrs.
Meyer was 79 years old. She Is sur
vived by her husband, H. A. Meyer, and
several children.
Oddfellows to Dedicate New Hall,
The new hall erected by the Lents
Oddfellows Lodge will be dedicated
next Tuesday night. The building Is
of reinforced concrete, two stories a "-.d
the cost was about (8000. It will be
furnlBhed for the use of the local Odd
fellows Lodge.

The reoalrs are made because of the
dangerous condition of the fill and
the liability or a collapse curing mo
rainy season. Not until yesterday was
the Commission able to Take up enougn
money for the repairs, the various
funds having been drained before the
present administration took charge.

the 12-inch main now being laid on
Millard avenue, or Fifty-fifth avenue.

will have an abundance of Bull Run
water. This main starts at East Fifty
second street and follows Millard ave
nue east to Foster road, thence to
Gilbert avenue and East Ninety-second
street, thence to Main street at the
Lents schoolhouse. From there another
main will be laid on Main street In
Lents. This Is one of the longest
mains laid In the South East Side and
will suddIv a larre territory. It will
reinforce the supply through the entire
Mount Scott territory.

Water Main to Be Completed.
Edward Gray, foreman of the Water
Denartment. announced yesterday that
the 30-lneh water main from the Mount
Tabor reservoir to the Peninsula has
been completed except a short stretch
on East Sixtieth street, where a few
lengths of pipe were left out some
time ago because these sections were
not on hand. These have arrived and
will be laid in a few days. This main.
which 1s to reinforce the water supply
of North. Alblna and the Peninsula
starts at Mount Tabor and runs to the
stand pipe In Vernon, where It ends at
present. Branches from this point will
be laid northeast and southeast later.
Fair-view to Have Celebration.
Fairview Labor day celebration plans
have been completed for next Monday.
Beginning at :30 A. it there will be
a baseball game between the Fairview
Junior and the Gresham Kids. Later
there will be another ball game. The
other events will consist of addresses
and exercises In the grove in the morn
ing when the silver cornet band of
Sandy will furnish e. concert. Then
will follow a barbecue of roasted ox
and sheep with an abundance for alL
There will be a dance at night. The
celebration will be held under the
auspices of Fairview Commercial Club.
Engineer Mason Injured. Charles L.
Mason, an engineer who has been many
years In the service of the Southern
Pacific Company, was bruised on the
head yesterday as he alighted from
his engine near the Baooklyn shops.
He slipped on the gravel roadbed and
was struck by the truck of one of the
cars. He was knocked unconscious
and was taken In an ambulance to
Good Samaritan Hospital. The report
last night was that his Injury was not
dangerous, and that he would be able
to be out In a few days. Mason Is it
years old.

it possible for the Portland Railway,
Light St Power Company to operate cars
over the Broadway DrKJge eariy in
September, thf City Commission yester.

nance granting a revocable permit to
the company to operate cars over the
bridge until the pending 25-year bridge
franchise Is passed. Under the pro
visions of the permit the company will
pay cents for each car going over
the bridge In either direction.
