THJS MOiiMMi .OKJiGOMAN, .V-fcDtfcJJAX, ALliLST 21, 1U13. EARLY BUYING ENDS Enough Wheat Secured September Tonnage. for MARKET IN FIRM SHAPE Clo to 8 1 Cents Paid for Club Daring Recent Actlvitj Barley Firmer Because of San Francisco Advance. Tradlna In the wheat rnarKet has slowed down, as the laras buyers are now oat of the market temporarily- It la not known Just how much wheat wa ooufht during the recent period of activity, but It la said enouzn waa recured to take care of all the September tonnage. Tna subsidence of early buyln has left the market In a firm poiltion. A food part of the club wheat was taken at IS cents, and where competition was keenest, clase to SI cents waa paid. Some off-grade lots were bought at prlcea that would Indicate that good lub was worth It cents. The other varieties of wheat were firm In sympathy. The firmness of barley at Ban Francisco has had a stiffening effect on the local bar ley market, but trade la not active. Feed barley is quoted st . and brewing at 133.10. The oats msrket is qnlet and quoted around J5. Spot lots or early shipments would probably command some premium over this price. For the past fortnight oats receipts have averaged only about two cars a day. The foreign whest situation la stated by Broomhall In his International wheat re view as followa: "Crop advices on the whole are moderately unfavorable, and harvesting in "Western Europe la dragging slowly, owing to the lack of sunshine. The trade here la now anxiously watching the result of Canada's harvest, especially In Saskatchewan, aa the fate of that crop la decidedly far more im portant than double or even treble the quan tlty grown In Btberla, owing to the difficulty and expense of transporting the latter crop. "The Canadian crop Is not receiving 'the usual amount of praise from Lord Strath cona and other officials, and therefore trad era here are apprehensive regarding final results. There Is evidently a great conti nental demand still for dry foreign wheat. and this demand Is likely to continue for some weeks longer, and then may be fol lowed by a good demand for the repletion of Winter stocks. On the other hand, sup plies from North America promise to be abundant, and the paramount question to be considered now is whether the prices are at a right level to attract a liberal aupply from the Northern Hemisphere to meet the likely good demand, while the new crops of Argentins, Australia and India are passing through the vicissitudes of their growing and harvesting season." New-crop wheat Is reaching Portland at a liberal rate. Since the season opened the receipts have been 1.151,800 bushels. Re ceipts at Tacoma in the aame period have ben "SS.IOO bushels, and Seattle receipts have been 729.300 bushels. Peaches were plentiful yesterday and good stock sold readily at 50 to centa a box- Trie bulk of the arrivals from The Dalles were in fine shape, and so were the Yakima peaches, but 1 there waa much complaint about some of the Medford stock, which was affected with dry rot and waa otherwise In bsd order. - The dumping of this kind of peaches on the market only hurls the sale of better fruit. Growers who are Intending to ship peaches to Portland this week should get their ship ments In by Thursday, or by Friday at the latest. The Labor day holiday comes on Monday, and there will be no business done between Saturday and Tuesday. The cantaloupe market was in good shape. The best Medford cants sold at :.5o a crate. The general range waa 11.60 to 11.75 on Vakimas and Turlocks. Grapes were plentiful and sold fairly welL Fancy Malagas were quoted at 11.25 and Rose of Peru at 90 cents to SI a crate. A shipment of Hawaiian pineapples was re ceived. Sweet potatoes were steady at I3.&0. with the arrival of a fresh car. The onion market is firm and likely to continue so throughout the season. Walla Walla and California onions are being shipped East, and thla la responsible for strong prices In those markets. The Oregon crop is coming on well and a good yield is now assured. LOCAL EGU MARKET IS SOW FIRM Packers Paying Higher Prices at Country Points Poultry Scarce. The egg market was firm yeaterday. with small receipts from the country. Ordinary candled stock was quoted at 28 cents and closely candled at ot cents. Packers were paying 25 cents in the country. Poultry and dressed meat receipts were light and all lines were firm In price. The cheese trade was slow, but with no surplus on hand. Butter cleaned up welL Advance In Sugar la Expected. An early advance in sugsr prices Is ex. petted by local Jobbers. The market has been firm for some time, because of the upward tendency of raws in the East. Yes terday these was an advance of 10 cents In refined sugar at New Tork. and the Coast markets are likely to respond in the near future. Better Hop Weather in England. The only Important sale waa a load of good weight eteers, which brought $7.75. Odd lots were disposed of at prices ranging from $5.50 to $7.50. Cows sold from $3.30 to $6.50. Commenting on the hor market, the Live stock Reporter says: coast killers are doing a nann-to-moutn business and buy accordingly. Perhaps if liquidation would be more consistent snd leas aoasmodlc the nrice ranxe would attiln some stability, but August receipts have had the unfortunate faculty of coming in bunches and slaughter-house hog-killing departments have been running tne same way. The an nual Fall run will soon commend and live pork prices will make their customery changes on a more satisfactory basis." Receipts tor tne asy were l iu cattle, of calves, 106 hogs and 100 sheep. NEW TORK, Aug. 28 Despite a vigor, ous drive which unsettled the market for a time in the early trading today, changes In most casts were Inconsequential and the market, as a whoie. continued to exhibit the. Indifference that has characterised it recently. Tha early nnaettlement centered around New Haven, which sold off at a rata that affected the whole list. Its low figure of the day was 82 4, a drop of over four points. The decline to a new low record waa attributed to estlmstea of earnings for the last fiscal year, which indicate that there waa a deficit of over 84.004.000 after payment of TH per cent dividends. steel. Smelting, Lehigh Valley, Union Pacl&e and a number of other stocks sold off a point or so. A quick turn In the course of the market cam with the announcement that the read ing of President Wllaon'a message to Con gress had been postponed at the request of the Mexican government. The belief that a change for the better waa Implied produced an Immediate result. There was a general rally, but price movements there after were, narrow. Passing of the dividend on the preferred stock of the "Big Four" caused a drop of Ave points in the common stock. The pre ferred, the last sale of which waa at 80, waa offered at 80. Speculative Demand Decreases Wltb Corn Coming In for Larger Share of Attention Gain Scored. CHICAGO, Aug. 2. Corn prices rose .c to o todsy. Wheat eased at the close, af ter an early show of strength, quotations being a shade to 0 net lower. Oats closed 9 e to o off and provisions finished a shada up to 60 down. The chief bullish factor In corn today waa the renewed talk of damage done by the hot weather to the Nebraska crop. Sep tember shorts covered freely and rising prices were helped by higher cables. The market was nervous and active throughout the day. Later In the day the weekly Iowa crop report stiffened prices with 4ts show ing of large losses to corn In various parts of the etate, the crop being estimated at more than 1,000,000 bushels less than that of last year. Wheat weakened toward the close of the session, largely on an Increase ot more than 2.OOO.O00 bushels in the world's available aupply. Another source of weakness waa a falling off in speculative wheat demand, corn again coming In for the greater share of attention. Falling off In export busi ness also helped the bears and prices eased sll around after noon, the early strength due to higher rabies snd a hardening of cash prices being counterscted by the per sistent bear attack. Heavy selling of oats by leading cash houses took the snap out of the market after an early show of strength. Generous selling of near months by tired longs depressed provisions, though at the close there was a better showing In lard. The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. High. Low. Close.
