T TETE 3IOKXIXG OKEGOXIAX. FRIDAY, AUGUST S, 1 13. 13 BOOTH-KELLY WILL REBUILD LARGE MILL Springfield Plant to Be Most Modern in Northwest, Says Manager of Company. POWER WILL BE ELECTRIC Corporation Obtains Title to Big Tracts of Timber and Plans to Start Construction at Once on Slto of Old Tards. ECGEVE, OR.. Aug. 7. (Special.) Immediate construction at Springfield of the most modern sawmill- in the northwest waa announced today ,by A. C. Dixon, manager of the Booth-Kelly Xiiimber Company. The, plana will cost approximately 1250.000. Electrical power is to be used throughout the mill and every pre caution will be taken to prevent a repetition of the fire of July. 1911, which destroyed the old mill and yards. Engineers will begin laying- off the yards within a few days and con struction Is to start at the earliest possible moment. .Mr. Dixon grave out the following statement this evening: "Having received advices that the Government has issued the last of the patents covering our Oregon and Cali fornia land grant lands, which have been in litigation, we are ready to an nounce -the prospective building of a new mill at Springfield, to take the place of the mill which wa3 burned in July, 1911 ' Cat to Exceed 30,000,000 Feet. The mill will be built to cut some thing in excess of 30.000.000 feet a year and tha logs will be supplied chiefly by rail from our camps above Wendling. : "We do not expect to build any power plant in connection with the mill, having arranged a. contract with the Oregon Power Company whereby we will furnish fuel from the plant at Springfield for that company, and will buy electric power from it to oper ate the mill. "Our dock room will not be large, but will have concrete base and be thoroughly substantial. Our plans con template the handling of the bulk of the lumber by electricity, partly by suspended mono-rail, and partly on tracks placed on the ground where the lumber will be conveyed by cars pro pelled by an electric locomotive. Ktre Precautions to Be Taken. "The mill will be sprinkled with an automatic system and every precau tion will be taken to protect the mill and property against fire. The build ings will be farther apart than they were in the old plant, and much of the lumber will be conveyed to a point several nunarea leet trora the old yard, both for the purpose of avoiding risk nu io give more piling room. "We also expect to establish a re tall yard." The old mill was destroyed on the night of July 2S, 1911. The Spring field water system was undergoing re pairs and the mill plant was soon out of commission, so nothing could be done to stay the flames. Rebuilding of the plant was entirely contingent upon the settlement or the I company's title to several thousand ' acres of timber . land which it had bought from the Oregon & California Railroad Company. This was accom plished through the "innocent purchas er's act," passed by the previous ses sion of Congress, and under which title to the land has been quieted. FUGITIVE ESCAPES ON ALIBI Gunman Says He "Was In Hospital at Tacoma at Time of Murder of San Foon Fong Chee Lung to Be Tried Xext Fall. After remaining more than four months in hiding to avoid capture on a chares of murder, Lew Soon, alleged arch-conspirator In the tong war of last March, has foiled his pursuers with the assistance of Governor Johnson, of California, who has refused to allow his removal from that state. Detective Ab bott, who went to California to press the case, is due to arrive home today, without his prisoner. Presentation of an alibi, showing that he was in a hospital at Tacoma when the murder of Lem Foon occurred at Second and Oak streets last March was tha basis upon which Soon won his freedom. The night of the murder the Chinese witnesses asserted positively that Lew Soon was in the background when Huey Chung and Luey King walked in and shot Lew Foon. In addi tion, the state is able to show- that a party of Chinese gunmen, who "came from San Francisco, quartered with Lew Soon in his place at Seventh and Flanders streets. Lew Soon was indicted with Wong Si Sam for the murder of Seid-Bing, whose dismembered body was shipped in a trunk to Seattle nearly two years ago. He escaped conviction on that charge through the lack of evidence other than that of Oi Sen, the slave girl. Fong Chee Lung is held at the Coun ty Jail, under Joint indictment" with Lew. Soon, and will be brought to trial next Fall. No traca has been found of the two Chinese who shot and killed Chung Ah Gong 15 minutes after the other murder. Hospital Contracts Awarded. SEATTLE, Wash., Aug. 7. (Special.) Mystery surrounding the disappearance of John P. Doherty, scion of a wealthy Honolulu family, who left his home in the Hawaiian Island eight years ago, was cleared today by Deputy United States Shipping Commissioner Peterson, who, after a search of the records of his office, learned that Doherty had died while a stowaway aboard the American schooner David Evans, bound from Manila for Puget Sound, and had been buried at sea. A few months ago relatives learned that Doherty was last seen in Manila and was believed to have been a stow away aboard the schooner David Evans, sailing from that port for Puget Sound in January, 1905. Captain Eyres, then master of the vessel, remembered that a stowaway from Manila by the name of Doherty had died during a voyage. The vessel's log contained an entry of the death and burial at sea.
