LAVEY BLOCKS PARDON EFFORTS OF FRIEXDS HALTED BY REALTY OPERATOR. Plan Outlined to Secure Freedom Through ex-Governor Haskell ana Secretary Bryan Falls Flat. Pat C. Lavey. sentenced to one year In Jail by the Federal Court for illegal real estate dealings, yesterday refused to let his friends proceed with their efforts to secure for him a pardon at the hands of President Wilson. It is believed that Lavey would have' had no trouble in. securing the pardon, but the real estate man has figured it all out and, having but six months more to serve, has decided he would rather pass that time in the company of Jailor Grafton and work on his latest inven tion which, Pat declares, will beat his little electric lights that stick to mir rors and window panes. Lavey .was . Secretary of. State In Oklahoma under Governor Haskell, who is a great friend of William J. Bryan, in the President's Cabinet, and It was the intention, to . approach Wilson through this channel, but Lavey has put a, stop to the proceedings and has settled down to another half year on the top floor of the county building, where he has just been appointed to night duty running the elevator. "There's the finest chance in the world to escape up Sixth street," says Lavey, "but it holds no temptation for me. I'll' bet anything that three months after- my- sentence has expired I'll be a rich man, because just look " And at this Juncture Lavey pulled out some photographs from a box in his quarters and exhibited them. No body but Lavey could tell what they were, but they looked Intricate enough to make anybody rich. Nor ltYreaterit People In Chicago. CHICAGO. July 28. (Special.) MONEY BiLL POSTPONED CAUCUS TO PASS OX ADMINIS TRATION CURRENCY MEASURE. Hearing Is Set for August H, When Dissenting Democrats Will Pre sent Objections. WASHINGTON, July 28. Democrats of the House banking and -currency committee agreed today to allow them selves two weeks more of wrangling over the Administration currency bill. Two weeks, from today a Democratic caucus will consider the measure. The Democratic committee members voted to authorize the chairman .. to call a caucus of the party on August 11 to act upon such a report, pending a report by the committee. Further than this the members directed the chair man to make public no details of what took place at the meeting. The supporters of the Administration bill having failed, inweeks of discus sion and argument, to win over three or four opponents of the committee members, it was decided to proceed without them and allow those dissent ing members to carry their light to the House caucus. This will throw Into the caucus the entire fight over the so-called insurgent amendments, providing for "cotton, corn and wheat currency," as framed by Representa tive Henry, of Texas, and Representa tive Ragsdale, of South Carolina. After considerable argument today the conference refused to allow the debate to be made public It was then voted to enjoin secrecy as to the pro ceedings on every member of the conference.
