There was a surprise In store for the waterfront community yesterday when. Captain Hand, formerly master of the we'.l-known British . tr.mp Inverklp, appeared as skipper of the new steamer Hawkhead, a carrier that has been in the water only eight months. She had made only two voyages from England to Galveston before being sent to tne West Coast and then here. Captain Hand left the Inverklp and was made commander of the Hawkheact five, months ago. sue is 398 feet long and has a beam of 52 feet, being almost the size of the Inverklp, except that her beam is greater. The Inverkip carried 3,639,000 feet of lumber on her last voyage from Port land and Captain Hand estimates that the Hawkhead will load about 3,700,000 feet. She came here from Eureka and has aboard 2,575,794 feet and is work lng the remainder of her cargo at the Clark & Wilson mill. Llnnton. For five years Captain Hand made at least one trip annually to Portland with the In verkip and Is about the best known master of a British tramp that has been In the trade out of this harbor. The schooner Sehome cleared yester day for Tambo de Mora and Sueve, Peru, with 756,720 feet of lumber valued at S10.244. Of the cargo 370,000 feet Is to-be discharged at Tambo de Mora. The vessel left down In the afternoon and Is expected to be towed to . sea today. A charter reported yesterday was that of the British steamer Algoa, owned by the Pacific Mail line, which A. & F. Thane have taken to load lum ber here for Sydney. She Is one of the largest vessels in the Pacific trade and previously has made two voyages from here. She held the record for a flour cargo . out of a Pacific Coast port in loading 85,276 barrels in November, 1903, in addition to 17,862 bushels o wheat, but since larger flour cargoes have been dispatched. The British tramp Knight of the Garter holds first place in having been cleared from here witli 5,000,000 feet of lumber, and there is speculation as to whether, the Algoa will not exceed that showing.
