Carl Mays didn't even warm up for Tortland yeeterday Dut he poked his peroxide thatch into a 4-1 defeat for his teammates on the Portland club, Just the same. And this explains the riddle: Mays hit Manager Delmas, of the Victoria Bees, on the knee in Tuesday's frame and yesterday Delmas had to lay off, Alberts, a pitcher, going to Bhort. To summarize briefly, Alberts murdered one of Martlnonl's shoots In the first Inning, whacking' out a home run over the left field fence and his drive scored three of the four runs amassed In that frame. Incidentally his homer gave Victoria the game, so that the series now stands two games apiece. Alberts Keeps on Hitting. Alberts continued his terrific clout- i Ing even after Martlnonl was benched In favor of Hynes in the third inning, securing three safeties in four trips up. In the last inning, too, he maneu vered a wonderful one-hand circus catch, robbing Callahan of a hit. All In all, the former Sacramento twirler went through Pastime Bay like a full rigged clipper, pushed by a 20-knot breeze. "Red" Toner pitched consistent ball for Victoria, allowing seven hits, but Hynes performed even more notably after ascending the mound In the third frame. The Bees sampled only four of his varieties in the seven innings and did not score A run. Hynes, in fact, was considerable more Btlngry with his offerings than Toner, for Portland had two excellent chances to clean up. In the second inning the Colts had the bases filled with nobody down, on a single by Melchoir, a walk and a dead ball, but even then could not count. In, the seventh a double play killed further Bcoring with the bases full. Kick Hits In Mnth. Nick Williams opened the ninth by a single to left, acting in the role of pinch hitter, but again Toner halted the locals. As usual that Meek and Swain com bination had much to do with the Bee tallies In the Initial Inning. Madden opened by a triple to center and scored on Meek'a hit through short. Swain walked and it was then that Alberts plugged the ball Into the left field bleachers, scoring three. Portland tallied its one run in the seventh on Hynes' double and Fitzger ald's single. The crowd numbered between 400 and BOO. Harry Todd was scheduled to twirl for Portland, but decijnedtp do so until given fi definite promise of another trial with the Coast Club. Catoher Conroy did hot perform so spec tacularly as on his first day out. He looked weak at bat, once whitflng without wiggling his bat with the bases full. Mahoney, Madden and Rawlings all exe cuted neat fielding stunts. Chris Mahoney waited out four balls on his firrt three appearances at the plate. Yesterday was Martlnonl's first yank of the season. The Bees seems to be his Jinx, for of five games he has lost three to Victoria. Either Boatman or Kantlehner will twirl for Victoria today, opposing probably South paw Stanley. , Oulgni used good judgment on a neat double play in the fourth inning. Charley Swain moved over to the sua field yesterday. Charley is a mighty valu able ball player. Besides being able to knock the leather off the sphere, he can fill In anywhere on the diamond. The Bees had him anchored at second for a Ions stretch. GIAXTS WIN OX HARD HITTING Coveleskle Is Wild, and Indians Lose, 11 to 5, to Seattle. SEATTLE, Wash, July 24. TEAMS TO SWITCH TODAY National Clubs on Way West While Americans Go East to Begin New Series Older League Has No Games Scheduled. NEW YORK. July 24. Not since the season's early weeks has such a base ball hiatus occurred as that of today, when not a single major league game was played and minor league contests in the East were conspicuous for their rarity. It was an off day, anyway, for the American League, the Western teams being on their way east to open new series tomorrow. Four games were scheduled in the National League, but rain prevented all of them, as It did numerous minor engagements on the day's programme. So general was the rain in major league Eastern territory that no at tempts were made to start games in New York, Brooklyn and Philadelphia, while in Boston the Braves and the Reds had played less than an inning when the downpour came. It was the last day of the current series in each city, and in consequence double-headers are likely to be arranged during the next Eastern invasion of the West ern contingent. Pittsburg had to leave New York without a single victory, the Giants having taken three straight. In Bos ton, Cincinnati took two out of three, while Chicago had to be content with one in three in Philadelphia. Brooklyn and St. Louis divided the two games played In the former city. The Eastern clubs in the National League are on their way west tonight. but only one game Philadelphia at Pittsburg is scheduled for tomorrow. In the American League Chicago will open in Boston, Cleveland in New 'York, St- Louis in Washington and Detroit in Philadelphia. BEARS LOSE TO BOISE TWO TEAMS ARE NOW TIE1 FOR FIRST IX TRI-STATE. He held the Portland Beavers to four hits today ad gave the best pitching exhibition of his career. But for a dropped ball by Bliss at the plate, and a. decision by Umpire Guthrie that aroused the wratn of the Wolves and caused a momentary slipping of a cog In Wolverton's baseball machine, the Hawaiian pitcher who is sought far and wide by major league scouts would have handed the league leaders a row of goose eggs. As it was they could get men on bases in only three Innings and of the six fortunate ones who found their way to first, only one went beyond. Sacramento won, 7 to 1. There was a fierce row in the second inning over a close decision at the plate which caused. the umpire to banish Shlnn and Van Buren. Portland gained the lead In the third with singles by Derrick and Fisher and an error. Then It was that the Wolves started In to get revenge for that decision. Williams opened the last of the third by drawing a walk and was forced at second by Young. Lewis beat James' throw to first. Roy Aforan tripled, scoring Young and Lewis. Derrick let the throw in go through him and Moran scampered home for the third run. In the fifth Young singled. Lewis sacrificed and Moran sent Young home with a double. Moran scored when Kenworthy singled. With two gone In the sixth, after Soldier Carson had taken up the mound work. Bliss was safe when Speas dropped Fisher's throw. Johnny Wil liams doubled. Carson stood squarely on third as Bliss ran Into the bag and Jack fell over him, but Umpire Guthrie for once took his time about making his decision, investigated the foot prints, looked at the dirt on Bliss' uniform and lndentlfied It as coming from the region around third base and then ordered Bliss to continue to the plate for Interference. In the eighth Eddie Halllnan cut one more notch In his timely batting record with a fierce clout to deep left center for a Corner.
