BT ROSCOB FAWCETT.
We have often been asked
How they'll close in October.
That's a hard thing to say . J
Until the season Is over.
But the gink who has picked ,
San Francisco to land in
The Pacific Coast League
Has guessed the right standln'.
It will be some time before the Seals
forget what Portland did to them, El
mer Lober, particularly. Lober again
distinguished himself for McCredle
yesterday in the final game, his ultra
sensational fielding and battlne virtu
ally clinching the sixth consecutive
Portland victory by a temperature of
2 to 1.
Six straight a clean sweep of the
series is quite some package to deal
out to that husky San Francisco bunch
in this "Land of the Knee and Home of
the Rave." Judging from the results
one might arrive at the conclusion that
the Seals are the best crew of steve
dores west of the Rockies. But such is
figuring without Lober.
The blonde, who came to Portland in
trade for Krueger, plainly committed
grand larceny yesterday before 4000
fans oh an afternoon so hot that even
the ball seeped perspiration. He nego
tiated two of the most spectacular
catches of the campaign. Elmer
reached the ultimate of all achieve
ments in the eighth Inning, however,
when he climbed the left wall like a
kangaroo and trapped with one hand
a terrific drive by Charles.
Lober Saves IIlBginbotham. -
That remarkable one-handed catch
saved Higginbotham. Mundorff was
prancing past second with the tying
run and an error at third by Substitute
Derrick a moment later would have
given the Seals victory.
But. wipe away our Incipient croco
dile tears, Lober held tightly to the
spheroid. Result Portland is two and
one-half games to the good in the
Coast race, the Angels having sunk to
third yesterday oh well, as Irvin Cobb
would say, the Angels are no worse off
than the Seals, who-have dropped like
a rock, rolled like a stone, dug like a
Mick, burrowed like a worm and are
gone.
Higginbotham and '"Doc" Thomas
were the opposing flingers and both
pitched a fair article of ball. Hlg al
lowed seven hits and had remarkable
control; Thomas nine hits. Thomas
chief mistake was In not having some
Lober to pull him out of the swamps.
Lober'a Double Figures.
Portland scored its two runs in the
second Inning. Speas, after two were
out, whacked the first of two hits into
center. He registered by great sprint
ing on Lober's two-bagger Into right.
Claude Berry, another of our palpi
tating pinch hitters, singled cleanly to
left, scoring Lober.
The boys threatened again in the
sixth, but Clarke and Charles nipped
Derrick at the plate on an attempted
double steal.
San Francisco's lone run accrued in
the third inning on hits by Thomas,
Charles and Johnston. Howard's only
other ripe opportunity came in the
eighth when Mundorrf beat out an in
field hit and stole second. Charles
here inserted his screaming clout into
left, which same Lober yanked off the
fence amidst a remarkable demonstra
tion by the fans lasting: fully two min
utes. Johnston went safe on Derrick's
error and stole second, but. with third
and second populated, Hogan struck
out.
Manager Howard ragged so hard at
Umpire Held's third strike decision that
he was sent to the shower bath de
partment for refrigeration. McCorry
twirled the last stanza for the Seals.
Both teams departed for the South last
night. Score:

Notes of the Game.
Bill Lindsay had to retire earlv in the
game as a result of the heat. Derrick went
to third and secured one hit In two trips.
Three circus catches featured the Seal
deaths in the seventh Inning. Lober manipu
lated one and Chadbourne the other two.
The Portland outfield is fielding at a won
derful clip.
Johnston stole three bases in the week.
His theft yesterday was a gift, as Mundorff
held down third. Berry used good Judg
ment and did not attempt to get Jimmy.
Johnston's total for the year is BS.
Downs suffered twice on hard drives that
the outfield pulled down.
Umpire Held was made the recipient of a
bouquet of flowers Just prior to the game.
He parried neatly by announcing the pack
age as a presentation to Umpire McCarthy.
The actual paid attendance was 3700,
not bad, considering the torrid atmosphere.
The umpires announced a time limit of
two hours and 20 minutes, but the game
was played In one hour and 30 minutes.
. Two pinch hitters failed for the Seals.
On their stay at home the Beavers won
13 and lost five. They have taken 20 of
the last 20 contests.

SEATTLE, Wash., July 20. (Spe
cial.) Weiser Dell was on the hill for
Seattle, and his coercive measures in
the critical moments enabled him to
put a 4-3 victory over on the Kortland
Colts.
It was a close and nard-fought bat
tle in which - there was practically
nothing to choose between the contend
ing teams. All the scoring was done
in the first four innings, and if Peters
had not fired the ball over Callahan's
head at first In attempting to retire
Shaw in the third, the- score would
have been a tie. Peters covers so
much ground that the pitcher has to do
a lot of covering, and there Is always
a chance of a mixup on" quick plays
with fast runners getting . down the
line.
Callahan held Seattle to five hits,
but he gave three passes, one of which
counted against him In the same inning
that Peters- made his error. On the
other hand, while Dell was hit safe six
times, he gave only, one bit of free
transportation, and that did not count.
as it came after & double play had
cleared the bases.
All of Portland's runs were scored
on homers, which were crowded into
the third and fourth Innings. Fine
pitching by Dell in two critical peri
ods and sensational fielding by Killilay
held the Colts in check during the last
five stanzas.
Outside of the third and fourth, in
which Seattle sot their four runs, Cal
lahan was superb and his support fine.
Melcholr's error was a muff of a ball
that he thought he had for keeps. It
cut no ngure lrt the scoring. Score:

Portland's baseball stage submits to
a 'change In scenery today. The plot
will remain the same, with "kill the
umpire" -the cue at every entry and
exit, but the characters will bo dif
ferent. Northwestern League ball sup
plants Coast League ball for at three
weeks' stretch, and today the oppos
ing clubs will be Nick Williams' Port
land Colts and L. A. Watellet's Victoria
Bees. ,
Martlnoni will likely be the Portland
pitching choice, and either Kantlehner
or Toner will hurl for Victoria. Toner
last appeared here with Spokane, but
has since been traded.- Harry Ostdiek
will umpire and will call play at 3:15
P. M.
-.
Last week Portland lost the series to
Seattle, four games to three, Sunday's
game deciding the supremacy. But
Nick's bunch performed like Trojans in
the three weeks away, winning their
series from Tacoma and Spokane for a
total of 13 victories and nine defeats.
Victoria had a terrible week, drop
ping seven straight to Vancouver in
the first week from under the wing of
Mike Lynch. Lynch, on the other hand,
led Spokane to a series over Tacoma,
four games to three.
Tacoma appears 'here next week and
Spokane the week following.
When the Portland Coast Leaguers
left last night for their three weeks'
trip in California two athletes were
missing Mike McCormick and Harry
Todd. Mike is convalescing from a
bone-scraping operation on - his shin
and Mac decided to give him abundant
time to get in shape.
In the meantime, if Bill Lindsay's
poor physical condition puts him on the
shelf for ajiy length of time McCredie
will call on Nick Williams to send
him Dave Bancroft. Mac intends to
haul the speed demon over late in Au
gust anyway, so as to save him for next
season in the Coast.

After eight Innings of good fielding
and exciting plays, the baseball game
between Albany and Dallas at thlo nity
this afternoon broke up in a- row in
the first half of the ninth inning, and
the Dallas team walked off the field
with the score tied at 3 to 3.
Two men were out in the ninth, with
a Dallas runner on first base, when
the batter missed the third strike. The
catcher dropped the ball, picked it up
and overthrew first base. The runner
on first completed the circuit of the
bases, and in the arugment which as
sued over ground rules the batter aljo
ran to the plate.
Basing his decision on a ground rule
providing for only one extra base on
an overthrow at first base, the umpire
ordered the flrtt runner back to third
and the other to second. The Albany
players contend this rule was under
stood fully by the visitors before the
game began, but the Dallas players as
sert they did not so understand it. and
when the two runs they claimed were
not allowed they left the field.
