REWARD COMES SLOWLY
ACTRESS SEEMS TO 1TEAU OF.
I'lCIALS FXAYING TRICK.
Justice Jones Holds to Jewels, Suid
to Be Worth 97 00 0, Pending
Arrival of S10O0.
While Amy Butler's 7000 Jewels are
reposing- in a safety deposit vault of
which District Judge Jones holds the
Key, a reward of $1000 which, according
to messages from. her. she has de
posited. In a bank at New York, re
mains there, and there seems no pres
ent prospect of an interchange
Miss Butler, the officials here be
lieve, is playing a crafty gams with
reference to Irer jewels, which were re
covered last Tuesday by Detectives
Hyde- and Vaughn after they had been
lost more than a year. To get a clew
to the hiding- place of the gems the
officers had to promise a reward of
$1000, with the approval of Miss Butler,
and on recovering the diamonds on a
search warrant they turned them over
to Judge Jones to be held until the
money should arrive.
The woman, who is a vaudeville
actress, seems to fear a trick, and sev
eral days of assiduous telegraphing
have failed to induce her to forward
the money. Likewise suspicious, Judge
Jones will not forward the jewels, fear
ins that they might be attached upon
arrival at New York. and the in
formant, whose identity is kept secret
might have to go back there to follow
up his clajm for the reward.
"This man is entitled to his money"
sa' Judge Jones, "and until it arrives
in Portland I shall hold the jewels."'
A proposal was sent by telegraph
yesterday, that Miss Butler shall for-,
ward the money, subject to a detainer
of "15 days, and if at the end of that
time she has not received the jewelry
and found it to be all that she claims,
the money shall return to her. Her
reply to this proposal is being awaited.

Mrs. Georgia Holman lost before Judge

"i iignt to obtain possession through
the writ of habeas corpus of her 5-year-old-son
from Mrs. J. Shannon, of B3
Harding street, her aunt. . Judge Gatens
decided, in his capacity of Juvenile
Judge, that the mother is not a. proper
person to have the custody of the
child and that Mrs. Shannon is. hence
the boy stays where he is. At the same
time the judge dismissed the applica
tion for a writ of habeas corpus.
In defending- against the application
for the writ attorneys for Mrs. Shan
non attacked the character of Mrs. Hoi.

cided that she was not to have the
baby, Mrs. Holman went into hysterics,
