A lot of 230 bales of 1912s was sold yes
terday for Immediate shipment to London at
16H cents. This price la two cents better
than the English buyer offered for the
same lot three or four days ago. There
were other bids of 16 cent for spots.
Contracts are quoted at 14 cents. Two
hundred bales of new Oregons have been
signed up by a Salem dealer at this figure.
No higher price has been bid so far this
season for the coming crop, but growers are
asking; more.
Cables received yesterday reported a light
attack of vermin on the Continent, but the
situation 1b not dangerous. The vines are
.strong and vigorous. Stocks of 1912s on
the Continent are entirely cleaned up. The
brewers over there, however, are better sup
piled than they were at this time last year.
';( ! PEACH MARKET PROSPECTS.
Indications Point to Higher Prices, Owtng
to Small Crops.
The situation In the dried peach market,
as regards the new crop, is thus reviewed by
the California Cured Fruit Exchange:
JThe probable situation on dried peaches
for 191R crop looks more favorable as far as
prices are concerned than for some time
back. The fruit generally throughout the
world has been considerably Injured by
frosts, drouths and heavy storms. Cali
fornia's crop apparently will not bo aver 30
per cent of last year's crop. Owing to the
scarcity of canning peaches, the canners will
undoubtedly buy more freely freestone
peaches, which will tend to cut down the
tonnage of dried peaches still more.
"The peach crop in Michigan has been
very badly injured by frosts; the peach crop
in Oeorgia is exceptionally light; and whll
re p lies are not dried In the East, a light
crop there should make a little' better de
mand for California dried peaches.
"On account of the prune crop being light
ami the apricot crop very light, prices are
bound to rule high In both, and this nat
urally should have some effect in strengthen
ing the prices for dried peaches,"

that have been taken. a feature of the
trading that luts been done has been the

NEW YORK, June 12. After a long and
gloomy period of ruling prices. Wall street
experinced today the distinctly no, ei sen
sation of having a genuine but: inrltt. Ln-
lavoraule factors which welghe.: so neaviiy
over the market a few days ago appeared
to have been temporarily lost sight of and
from the time the market opened until the
day was done the forward movement went
cu uninterrupted.
Canadian Pacific bounded up points.
Union Pacific 6, Southern Pacific 4h, Lehigh
Ycifrey 6z. Reading 4, and most other active
stocks 3 and more. Trading wag active.
Various developments of the day helped
to send up the market. Underlying them
all, however, was the belief of many traders
that the recent downward movement had
been overdone. Technical conditions called
for a reaction, the force of which was in
creased by a concurrent reaction in senti
ment. Perhaps the most Influential of these fac
tors was Secretary McAdoo's announcement
that he would sanction issuance of emerg
ency currency It was not generally be
lieved that banks would find It necessary to
ava'l themselves immediately of this meas
ure of relief, but the prospect of continued
tightness in time money, with the possibili
ties of a serious squeeze In the Pall, had
been causing no little anxiety and this Indi
cation that the Secretary would do all in
his power to avert such conditions was defi
nitely helpful to the market.
While few time loans were placed, that
market continued to be mostly nominal.
Heavy purchases of mercantile 'paper were
made by large banks. One institution took
up $7,000,000 of prime mercantile paper at
6 per cent. This was accepted as an indica
tion of increased confidence on the part of
large financial interests In the outlook.
Union Pacific's plan to trade its Southern
Pacific stock for Pennsylvania's holdings of
Baltimore &. Ohio apparently openud a way
for disposing of a substantial part of Union
Pacific's S125. OOO.OOO of Southern pacific.
and was a large factor in the Btrength of the
Harnman stocks.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value, $2,900,000. United States bonds were
unchanged on call.

selling movement. Realizing by recent
sellers and moderate buying for a reac
tion caused a rally of several points, but
prices broke again on larger receipts re
ported at Sao Paulo. A final rally of two
or thr points on covering gave the market
a steady tone at the close. July, 9.40c;

sal' and retail trade the strawberry market
wrs lower than It has heen any time this
season. On the farmers' market prices
ranged from 75 to Pu cents, and on the
greet the best stock sold at i0 cents to $1.1 0.
Receipts were ns largo as usual, but every
thing cleaned up.
Cherries of all kinds were scarce, and good
fruit sold easily at 12 rents. Three cars
of bananss and two of oranges were re
ceived.. Vegetables generally sold at unchanged
prices.

Much Poultry Is Carried Over.
Poultry receipts were heavy yesterday and
because of the short day a good many coops
had to be carried over. A few sales of
hens were made as low as 14 cents. Broil
ers were takn readilj. The veal market was

The egg market was firm, particularly on
candled stock. Receipts were light.

erally conceded that dry weather damage

wise, bullish sentiment regarding wheat to
day became rampant. The market closed

New investors bought wheat freely
throughout the day, notwithstanding that
midway of the session some of the larger
longs Indulged In profit-taking and brought
about temporarily a substantial reaction.
Temperatures ranging up to 100 degrees
In the Canadian Northwest were supple
mented by dispatches from this side of the
boundary that hot winds exhausting mois
ture had suddenlv followed recent frosts.
and that the result must bo unfavorable to
wheat. Active milling demand lent unsua
tained buoyancy to prloes in transactions
near the close.
Export clearances of wheat ana flour
equalled 301,000 bushels. Primary receipts
of wheat were 566,000 bushels; a year ago
308.000 bushels.
Remarkable buying of corn lifted active
months into the 60s.
In oats, the main feature was the lively
purchasing on the part of the country
houses.
Provisions averaged a little higher on
account of an advance in the hog mar
ket. Realizing sales by owner modferated any
tendency toward a decided bulge.
The leading futures ranged as follows:
WHEAT.
Reconstruction of the East Side ap
proach to the Burnside bridge and the
complete repair of the draw will start
some time next week. The bridge will
remain closed, after 19 years' service
to streetcars and other traffic, until
the repairs have been completed, which
way take from two to three months
time. All the material for the new
approach has been assembled.
The approach must be rebuilt from
the ground with new piles and new
lumber. A steel viaduct will be built
over East Second and East First
streets above the railroad tracks. The
steel is on hand for this viaduct. The
exact time for closing the draw will
be announced next week.
All material for repairs to the draw
will he loaded on to the draw, and
then it will be swung around on the
draw rests. It will then be jacked up
and the steel track will he rebuilt
The approach was rebuilt ten years
ago, but the draw has never been over
hauled completely. BurnBide bridge
will have been in service 19 years next
July 4 continuously, except for eight
days, when it was closed for repair
fhe draw weighs 800 tons, according to
the late W. B. Chase, who superin -tended
the erection of the bridge. It
cost $385,000, including landings and
cost of lawsuits. It is said that few
bridges in the United States have had
better record for continuous serv
ice.
Matt Welch, who looks after county
work, will have charge of the repairs
to the bridge.

FORCE MAY BE CUT DOWN
Xew City Government May Make
Changes in "Water Department.
Radical changes which probably will
be made in the Water Department when
the commission form of government be
fomeg effective will decrease the force
materially and cut down the expense.
Tt is said to be certain that the engi
neering division of the department will
be transferred to the office of the City
Engineer and the financial division to
the office of the City Treasurer.
The change will result In the aboli
tion of the position now held by Water
Engineer Clarke, who has bfen in the
city employ for many years. His Balary
is $350 a month. It is said that Mr.
Clarke already has arranged to resign
from the department, but he refuses
either to confirm or deny the report.
The projected change would let out
some of the clerks in the collection
division. It will be necessary for the
help, but it is said that the number ot
men will not be as great as the num
ber maintained in the collection divl
slon of the Water Department.

Railroad Officials Kxpect Unusual
Movement in Oregon.
Preparing for the great volume of
traffic expected from the heavily-laden
orchards of the Willanfette Valley,
representatives of the Southern Pacific
Railroad and the Pacific Fruit Express
held a conference Wednesday to check
the prevailing refrigeration rates to
points In the East. A schedule for the
movement of traffic was prepared and
final details will be worked out as the
actual crop begins to move.
Railroad men are looking for an un
usual volume of traffic in farm and
orchard products this season, particu
larly in the Lower Willamette coun
ties, where the acreage In hops Is al
most doubled and much increased in
onions.
The Southern Pacific In preparing a
new rate schedule on such products,
which, in some cases, will be lower
than present rates to points In Cali
fornia. These will be effective In
about 60 days.

lisn setter, and both were picked up
as puppies by the French beauty and
personally trained for the act. Educat
ing a dog for posing work is not the
easiest task In the world, and it has
taken years to brings the dogs to their
