SCHOOL EXHIBITS GOOD DOMESTIC SCIENCE, ART AVI) HAXDICRAFT 8HOWX, Mnny Btttdtmta or Jefferson High School Earn Money by Mak ing: Dresses. The classes In domestic science, do mestic? art. drawing ahd handicraft of the Jefferson High School held a Joint exhibition Thursday afternoon. In the sewing-room were many beautifully made garments, ranging from the plainest of aprons, house dresses and useful undergarments to elaborate lingerie, evening gowns, tail ored suits and evening wraps. There were also some dainty and attractive graduating dresses of astonishingly low cost, made by third and fifth-term grx. The study of cost and suitability of materials is a special feature of the course. Pretty dresses were shown which cost less than $1 for materials. Including trimmings. Many of the students are earning money outside school by their dress making ability, but the chief aim of the course is to fit the student to do all the work needed In the home In a thoroughly efficient and workmanlike manner. Miss L. Hendershott and Miss R. Straube are in charge of this de partment, tinder the supervision of Mr. A. A. Sanborn. The domestic science department is In charare of Mrs. Ellen Rawson Miller and Miss Gertrude Blackmar. under the supervision of Miss Lilian Tingle. The array of diahes prepared by first and second-term students included excel lent bread of many shapes and vari eties, hyglentcally wrapped and well up lo tin- best "home" and even "profes sional" standards. Fine cakes, cookies and candles were balanced by practical and wholesome meat, fish and vegetable dishes. Sam ple dinners- were shown of most ap petizing appearance at 10 to 16 cents a head for materials and meals foi different classes cf persons on "spe cial diets" were shown. Interesting and instructive also were some studies In house planning and In the cost and selection of household furnishings for different Incomes, shown by the advanced students of the home economics class, which proved that beautiful and harmonious sur roundings are not necessarily costly. This i laas showed also some studies In the cost and selection of clothing, and snoth.r in the proper use of cleaning materials and methods for household use. Besides a very fine exhibit of studies In design from natural forms, and of life and object drawings, excellent work in useful articles of leather and metal were shown, as well as woven decorative designs for table runners and bags. Bookbinding is a new feature, and exan plea of different styles were shown. Including useful magazine bind- PORTLAND ACCORDION PLEATING. K.
