Yesterday Indicate that the defendants
will aeek to prove In defense that acts
rf the county officials alleged to have
been libelled. Commissioner Llghtner
and County Judge Cleeton. were sucn
as to render them at least technically
liable to Imprisonment, and thus gave
ground for the article on which the
Indictment Is based.
The missing indictment tnrned up
yesterday. It had been carried away
from the Courthouse by Rev. George
C. Carl foreman of the February grand
Jury, the body wnlcn returnea it- Mr.
Carl was a witness last week when an
ffnrt wan made to auash the Indict
ment. and absent-mindedly stuck the
paper in his pocket. He recalled it
when he read in The Oregonlan yester
dav that it was missing.
Albert Feldenhelmer. Washington
street Jeweler, is on the venire this
month. He was examined yesterday.
He said that he had been in business
in Portland 87 years, and during all
that time had known Commissioner
Lisrhtner. and that It would take a
great deal to convince him that Mr.
T.lahtnrr la dishonest. The defense in
terposed a challenge for cause and he
was excused. Anotner venireman
keeps a grocery store on the Powell
Valley road, and for 1 years baa bad
Mr. Llghtner aa a customer. He ex
hibited a somewhat similar frame of
mind and waa excused also.

COUNTY RESEARCH DECIDED
Taxpayers' Lcajfue Employs Xew
York Bureau to Investigate.
TThdeterred by the refusal of the
County Court to stand the expense,
members of tha- Taxpayers' League de
termined at a meeting yesterday to
have the county system of doing busi
ness examined and recommendations
covering changes made by the New
Tork Bureau of Municipal Research,
which made a similar probe Into the
affairs of the city. The expense will
be borne by the league and the work
will be done by L D. Sands, an expert
in tha employ of the bureau.
The County Court refused to employ
Sands, giving as a reason tha fact that
Insurance Commissioner Ferguson has
been delegated by tha Legislature and
given an appropriation of 17600 to in
stall uniform systems of accounting In
all the counties of the state. The court
took the view that It would b dupli
cation of effort and useless expense to
employ the bureau.
Mr. Sands will be free to inspect the
records aa the representative of his
taxpaylng employers. The consent of
the County Court is not necessary.

plaining at the police station yesterday,
how it came about that ha "blacked"
both of Max Volruba's eyes and split his
lip. The Salvationist Is a man below
medium slse, while the castigated one
is somewhat "husky."
Mr. Coffey charges that Volruba, aft
er being befriended at the Salvation
Army barracks, at 24 Union avenue, has
on two occasions stolen clothing from
there. Caught in the act yesterday, he
was pursued by the captain, clad only
In trousers and shirt, and when the
fugitive showed fight ho "got It."
When ha reached the police station both
eyea were swollen shut, his Hp waa
split and he was pleedlng profusely.
After taking the beating, Volruba.
who carried a number of Socialist peti
tions for the eight-hour day, fled to the
river-front, where he waa captured by
Detectives Vaughn and Hyde and de
livered at the polio, station. t

had a little, but very little. A man
doesn't learn all there Is In politics
by trying to get elected or In hav
ing an office or two. He's got to keep

whom everybody speaks well may
have seen very little political life and
might not be competent.
I started a long time ago. When 1
came to Portland I had to cross gulches
In this city by walking over rallen
trees. Many of these gulches have
been filled or else beautiful bridges
have connected them with paved streets
and the old trails are about forgotten-

The Oregonlan was the only news
paper, and it had the same Republican
policy which It still adheres to. The
old-timers were all Republicans, and I
haven't noticed a change in The Ore-
gonlan's policy, after following Its edi
torials carerully lor 61 years, mis is
my second visit to The Oregonlan
building, and that's not bad for a man
who has been a Republican politician,
stumping the state and crying out for
Republican standards.
'After 28 years in publlo life I still
feel young in the game. I like to mix
up with politicians, and my experience
usually gains a hearing for me when I
make a statement. I lost my wife In
March. 1912. My daughter, Bessie,
keeps house for me now, and I have five
other children: B. F. Irvine, of the
