OREGON MAY ENTER TEAM IN BIG MEET Hayward, Invited to Send Men to Pow Wow, Would Keep Them From Club. SCHMITT'S CONSENT ASKED I jjgene Trainer Xot to Hold CoI!eg ians From Multnomah for June 1 4 Games rnlcss Winged "M" Agrees to lt Them Go. T L'nlverslty of Oregon may enter Its regular track squad at the Pacific Northwestern track and field cnara plonshlps In Portland, June 14. Instead of letting th lemon-yellow athletes disport under the colors of the Mult soman Athletlo Club. Bill Hayward, reteran Oregon coach. made a hurried trip to Portland yester. rfv to confer with Manager Bill Schmttt, of the Winged "St." The lat ter was out of the city, howerer. so Hayward returned to Eugene and will conduct negotiations by letter or tele- ntiAn. "rinAkinn has written me. offering expenses for eight men at the Pow "Wow there June :0." explained Coach iiavwnrtl "Mr men cannot compete here June H for Multnomah and then r.oknna for Oregon, so I wish to talk things over with Multnomah and see if the Wlngea .M" cannui along without our aid." u.nuir Rrhmltt returned from Cor vallis last night and when informed of the muddle, said he woura iae mo matter up with Hayward Immediately We had fltrured on using five Ore gon men Wlndnagle. Hugglns. Par sons. Neill and McClure but the ad dition of Pick Grant and Goreczky. snrlnters. to the squad, and of Paul Wilson, of Stanford, distance star, will likely offset the loss or tne uresjon men." said Manager Schmitt. if Oregon enters a team there will be some spirited duels fought out on Multnomah field June 14, for the ore gon Aggies have already signified their intention of having a team here, "iiaa Moulton, of Stanford. Is already at Cor. rali Is. assisting Dr. E. J. Stewart, ath letic director, who is himself a great track .wizard. Schmitt was not at all disappointed at the failure of the Multnomah ath letes to win the meet at Corvallls Saturday. Ha was shy the star pole vaultcrs. Beliah and Holdman, and had only five men on hand. As It developed the 'Winged "M." won five firsts, Haw kins starring with three, the two hur dles and the broad jump. Three of the marks set at Corvallls are worthy of more prominence than was awarded them. Hawkins' feat of topping the high timbers In :15 1-5 wss one of the sensa tions of the 1913 campaign In the West. This ties his old record and also the American Intercollegiate record, first manufactured by Kranzleln, of Penn sylvania, and now shared Jointly by Kranzleln, Smithson. Donald. Nichol son. Kelly. Hawkins and Whltted. Forrest Smithson. who made the 110. meter flights at the London Olympics In 1I0S In :1a flat, holds the Northwest ern Intercollegiate record of :15 4-5. made in 1906. while Smithson and Hawkins are Joint holders of the Pa cific Northwest Association record of 15 2-5 seconds. Hawkins, winner of third place at the Stockholm Olympics last Summer, bids fair to break the Northwest record June 14. John Baker's negotiation of the 100 yard dash In 10 seconds flat and Phil brook's mark of 44 feet. 4 inches In the shot are also highly meritorious. Baker appears to have fully recovered from his accident. Two of the watches at Corvallls Saturday caught him in 9 4-6 seconds and It will not surprise any body to see the Portland boy go under 10 seconds before the year Is over. He is one of the crack sprinters of the world today. SCXXtERS WORK OCT OX RIVER Crews of Portland Rowing Club Make Good Showing.
