CONFIDENCE IN ALL LINES Money Conditions Easier at Home and Abroad Settled Weather Tie suits In Larger Retail Activity. v Lumber Business Good. NEW YORK, April 25. Dun's Itevlew to. morrow will say: Notwithstanding the recent moderate re duction In trade and Industrial activity. It is significant that confidence still prevails and In the West and South a spirit of op tlmlsm Is manifest as to the future largely based upon the fine crop outlook for both cotton and wheat which contrasts wltn the more conservative feeling that exists in Eastern centers. The work of recovery from the effects of the mid-Western nooas is progrt-esjns, and this gives increasing relief to business. The tariff readjustment continues to inspire caution in the trade circles more immeu lately affected, but the end of uncertainty la now not far distant. . Weather conditions are distinctly better and this gives an Impetus to building opera tions and also to retail trade and real estate transfers. Money conditions are easier both at home and abroad, and while there is some re newal of anxiety regarding the Balkan sit uation, international conditions as a whole are much less disturbing. Pig Iron and steel mills report business as fully up to normal. Textile lines show soma abatement In activity. Lumber is more active. Trado in anthracite coal is larger. Renorta from the leadlnx Western and Northwestern cities are very cheerful In tone and the advent of more settled wcatner has resulted in larger retail activity. Interest and dividend disbursements in May will exceed $160.000,000 a considerable increase over last yesr. Bank clearings this. week showed a loss of 27. per cent, as com pared with 1912. Railroad earnings In the first two weeks of April were 1.1 per cent under a year ago, which Is an effect of the floods. Foreign trade at New York amounted during the last week to $34,600, 110, against $42,738,711 in 1012. Commercial failures this week In the United States are 307 against 310 the cor responding week last year. Failures in Can ada number 46. GOOD WEATHER AXDS CURRENT TRADE Northwest and Southwest Hot Afflicted by Tariff Matters. NEW YORK. April 25. Brsdstreet's to morrow will say: Trade reports continue to present con trasts In that a line or demarcation has to be drawn between Immediate and future or ders. On the one hand, business for current or nearby delivery Is good to active, all depending on the section of the country considered, the stimulating Influence being furnished by greatly Improved weather con ditions. A-ralnst this development roust oe cited the fact that there Is a general dis position, except in the Northwest and an parts of the Southwest, to wait until tariff matters become clearer before anticipating future requirements. With conservatism manifested on mat ac count, the controlling idea the country over seems to be for the scaling down of stocks Under the circumstances there, is a marked tendency to shop frequently and to buy in small lots. Lumber continues very active in the Northwest. Wool and woolen goods, more than any other line, seem to be more strongly affected by Impending tariff changes. ' . SDeclficatlons on finished steel are still heavy, though the volume of such appears to be abating and It Is easier to get de liveries of structural steel. New business Is llaht. TH-r Iron Is dull, except where urgent needs necessitate prompt buying. Copper is quiet, but prices are firm. Money is earler. Stock prices continue Ir regular. The undertone as regards bonds is a little better. Crop reports are encouraging. Winter wheat Is in excellent shape and needed rains are reported In the states west of the Mis sissippi. In the South the general report is favorable as to crop progress or plant ing. Wheat, including flour, exports from the United States and Canada, for the week ending April 24 aggregate 3.433,594 bushels, against 3,169,514 bushels this week last year. Business failures for th-f week ending April 24 were 273, which compares with 248 In the like week of 1912. Business failures In Canada numbered 21. Bank Clearings. . NEW YORK. April SS. Log Drives Start Soon. STATTON, Or April 26. (Special.) Joseph Petgel'B log drive will start as soon as the work of rolling logs in the river is completed, which will be this week. The boom which was put in the river to divert the logs into the local water power company's ditch, formerly the old channel of the Santiam River, has caused delay and trouble. It has broken twice and has been lengthened 250 feet, making it a 7-foot boom. The Spalding Logging Company, of Salem, hh8 started rolling their logs into the river above Mehama and as soon as Fetzel gets clear of the main river he will put on a big crew. Trainer Pokes Head In Huge Liion's Mouth While Crowded Tents Gasp in Horror Two Shows Today. The circus season in Portland is offi cially opened. Al G. "B6"' "'" land, but better ones never. The trained animals alone are a marvelous snow. The big feature is the trained lion act, in which 20 big tawny beasts of the Jungle go through a series of re markable tricks. Loui3 Roth, their trainer, puts his head fearlessly in an old lion's mouth, while the audience gasps in horror. Another bit of this act is the pyramid work. In which the lions form two animal pyramids ten lions in each and three lions high. A band of seal three in the band are called Tom, Dick and Harry. Dick and Harry are clown comedians and Tom applauds their acts with his flap pers. The seals ride ponies, do a fine balancing act ana piay Daseoaiu The amusement features are many. Of these a burlesque on the militant suffragettes causes mirth, and so does the travesty on the bullfight, staged by the sacred cow and a negro acrobat. There's a herd of trick elephants, one of which is a barber and lathers, shaves, washes, dries and sprays the face of one of his mates. A veritable sensation was the balloon Hon, in which act a big lion, growling fiercely, was hoisted to tne top 01 me tent on a mechanical platform. None of the attractions is lacking from the callope winding up the parade Recommending Bitulithic means recommending paying which has a recoi-d , back of it. You take no chances with it.
