publish bis poems In book form, and
as a poet will occupy the high place
of esteem which Captain A. W. Nelson,
ex-master of the Beaver and now on
the Korea, held as an author in the
minds of Portland citizens.
The Breakwater had 95 passengers
and 40 tone of freight. Among the
passengers was W. F. Miller, superin
tendent of the line, who brought his
family to Portland from Marshlteld on
a visit. May & is the date when the
vessel will start on Its five-day
schedule.
Amomr Csptaln MacGenn's latest
poems are "Love." "Crossing the Bar"
and "Sunset." These he composed following-
his trip to New Tork In Janu
ary. Besides be has added to his verses
on Mark Antony, and Is composing a
poem entitled "Friendship.
While in the East Captain MacGenn
visited Colonel Roosevelt at S:i-amor
Hill, and the ex-President gave him the
following autograph letter of introduc
tion to the editor of the Outlook:

flattering manner. Captain MacGenn's
noem "Virtue." which he admired both
for its ouality and the subject the cap
tain had chosen to write about. The
poem was published In The Oregonian
in 1910.
Captain MacGenn will go to Scotland
In 1J1S, and while ther will arrange
for the. copyrighting of bis new book
of poem In the British Isles.

the lower Alaska dock formerly etooa.

with the Hamburg - American line,
whereby the latter will use the. prop
erty for its Portland-Orlental-European
service.
Negotiations have been on for scv
eral weeks between the two and at
first the Hamburg-American will use
Ainsworth dock, but as the trade la ex
nected to grow and there will be a vol
ume of business exchanged between
the rail and water lines, the cteamshtp
interests could utilise considerate
more space than will be available on
Ainsworth. The latter is also used as
berths for steamers of the "Big Three;
f. well as a warehouse ror th
largo they handle.

building had the appearance of being

pointed off to look like brick. That the
flames were confined to this structure
reflects credit on the volunteer fire de
partment, aroused at 6 o'clock In the
morning.
