DEFEAT OF OAKS UNLIKELY Beavers Can Lose Three of Seven (,itnfi This Week and Still Re turn to Portland With Even Break l"p to Date. BT ROSCOS FAWCfcTT. While toe San Francisco Seal may not be of first division caliber. Port land's feat of capturing four a-aines of the first six away from horn la ths opening series of the Itll season of tne Paclflo Coast League la to be con sidered In tbe itaht of a good omen. The most pleasing feature of tbe Beavers beginning Is the apparent re liability of its pitching corps, nig Kinbothatn won tho opening game, 1 to 2. allowing but five hits; Krapp took his first start on eight hits: Hag rrmio set the Seals down with two lone blngles. while James eased up when bis team secured a big lead for him yesterday and romped home on nine hits. The two games lost to the Seals were taken by the close margins of I to 1 and 1 to 0, Carson and West both performing remarkably well for the early stage of the race. The lat ter gave only five safeties In 13 In nings. Lees of Series Probable. Against the Oaks this week Portland naturally can expect sttffer compe tition; in fact, the trans-bay bunch , should take four games of the seven, playing on their own diamond. But the Beavers can lose the aeries, four games to three, and still come home over ..WO aa a result of the outcome of the .-eries with the Seals. And what more ran the fana desire? McCredle set out early last Fall to secure a stalwart staff of fllngers and apparently he has succeeded. Neither Krause nor Stanley has been worked yet. but the former will undoubtedly get his trial against Mine s minions this week. Higglnbotham. Hagerman. Krapp and West are the men who have most Im pressed the California critics, but Mc Creole's faith In Al Carson Is best emphasized by the fact that he started him in the second game of the sea eon, James, too. while wild and wooly. Is almost certain to win more than half of his games, even If he does leave a hospital list as long as Jack lovely's. He hss more steam than any pitcher who haa been seen In the league in years and is bound to be effective. As for Harry Krause. any plteher who can win 13 out of 17 games In tie American Association, ss the St. Mary's southpaw did In 1912. surely Isn't going to fizzle out during the ff season. ttlaaler to to Colta. McCredle already has announced that Stanley Is to be turned over to Mrk Williams, but if the other Coast c'uhs only knew It, the Philadelphia portelder is too valuable a hurlsmlth to b permitted to slip through the waiver line. If he goes, it will be as a victim of overcrowding. He must put something on the ball when he Is "right." because he led the Trl-State tissue last year with 13 wins and seven defeats, and In three games in one week he fanned 14, 15 and 14 batsmen, or a total of 43. Stanley should prove a bearcat for the Class B club If he Is switched over The result of the first week's games at Sacramento and Lo Angeles show little except that the 8acramento. Oak land. Los Angeles and Venice teams are quite evenly matched., with Los Anael-s a trifle stronger than ex pected. The size of the scores in the series between the Angels and Tigers mlht seem to her out the March hypothesis that Uillon's and Hoxan's flins-lng corps are not quite up to snuff. 1'itrhlng weakness Is a serious de fect, and If the Braver have an edge there, as McCredle thinks, Portland .stand an excellent chance of being up around the top from the firing of the signal gun down the homestretch. Beaters Wle Advaatage. The locals were decidedly forttiuale In meeting up with San Francisco the first wee! and thus being able to dis pose of one of the six series before the SrslK concluded their strengthen Inn. Fans in Cal E a-lite; a town have assumed a decidedly "ihov-m" atti tude, and without question Manager Howard will he given power to In v.'iiTle in two or three new major re cruits Immediately. Ilnwever, the Seals arc not such a patchwork combination as one might imagine from the roasts daily peddled lv their home newspapers. Honl-y. Arlett. Delhi. McCorry and Douglass continue the foundation of a mighty sood pitching corps. In the Infield Howard at first and Corhan at short do not suffer by comparison, while Johnson, the new Chicago Importation, and Mundorff, In the Outfield, com hine great speed on the paths with "od fielding and heavy stirkwork. Spencer is as good a backstop as Is in the league, when he Is Inclined to he good, and he has been strictly on the aqua vehicle against the Beavers. The writer confidently experts the Mi-Crcdleites to present a formidable front against the Commuters In the seven-game session beginning tomor row.
