Mierlff Word Says Evidence Is Be ing Collected on Which Indict- t ment Is Expected. J. Owen, advertising; representative of the Sunday Mercury, who was ar rested Thursday night by Sheriff Word on a charge of extorting money from Mrs, Carrie L. Kessler, proprietress of the Athens Hotrl. obtained his release yesterday on ball of J 1000. He was ar raigned in Justice Court. The case went over to April 10. In the meantime the District Attorney's office will pre sent evidence before the grant jury and hopes to have an indictment re ported against Mm before the case comes up again in Justice Court, mak ing further proceedings in that court unnecessary. Sheriff Word yesterday started an Investigation of other alleged extor tions on the part of representatives of the Sunday Mercury. He aaid last night that the proprietress of another hotel had called to see him and declared that he paid, on the advice of her attorney, money for advertising space in and a subscription to the paper rather than suffer a 'writeup." She said that she has always run her place in an ex emplary manner. biA that her attorney thought it was cheaper to pay the pet ty amount demanded. J 5. than have anything appear in print. After agree ing to pay. she said, an attempt was made to double the amount of the bill, but she refused to pay the other 15. "In an affidavit which I am having prepared by this woman tba statement will be made that a sergeant of police accompanied her to the office of the Mercury and obtained there an affi davit that the paper had nothing on her and that this policeman then let the case drop," said Sheriff Word. The District Attorney's office haa the cancelled check given by this woman and the receipted bill given her on BUSINESS DIRECTORY ELECTRIC MOTORS.
