OLD LACE AND ITS VALUE Veil Are Hired Temporarily With Which to Deck Brides. New Tork Times. Valuable, pieces of old lace are more rare than many people think. Even bridal valla "SiO years In the family" have histories that all the world does not know. A woman who had in herited from ancestors ou the other side some very beautiful lace, and who was a conneisseur, was surprised at the very beautiful bridal veils she saw from time to time in the rooms nf her dressmaker. -1 had no Idea." she said to the latter, "that there were so many peo siA in. .'c Tork, aha .had auo ex quisite lace. The veils are magnificent and worth any amount ot money. Down on the lower East Side there are numerous shops In which appear the radiant figures of brides in full regalia, many of them accompanied by bridegrooms also clad in the somberly festive garments in which a man be comes a benedict. Brides' or bride grooms' glad rags can be hired for very small sums so much for the wedding ceremony. It ts a comfort able and economical method of pro cedure. The world In general does not suppose that practices of tne kind obtain on the upper east side, but they do. "Those beautiful lace veils do not belong to the a. rides who wear them." the dressmaker In a moment of con fidence, confided to her customer. "I hire them at a lace shop for $10 for the evening and the "o years In one family goes with them." But it is not everywhere that a fine lace veil could be found at short no tice. The best department stores do not keep on hand quantities of the finest old lace. The demand la neces sarily small and the laces too valuable to have much money tied up In them. They are also perishable, subject to wear and theft. A woman who keeps about as many fine laces as there are to be found In one shop knows to her sorrow that there are lace thieves. A. handsomely dressed woman who drove up to her shop In an automobile saw some of the finest and most expensive laces one dav. She wished the best and looked at several pieces. While these were on the counter she saw a pretty, less ex pensive piece In a case, which she asked to see. "1 know It Is not as good a lace." she said, "but the design is pretty. However. I think I will wait before taking any. and you may have some thing else in." Then she entered her automobile and drove away, but she hsd taken with her the finest piece of lace, worth hundrds of dollars. She had slipped It Into her muff when the proprietor of the shop had stooped for the less expensive piece. Then she had driven away, and there was no trace of her or of the lac. GASOLINE PULLS PLOWS Twenty Acre Per Day, tO Cents Per Aero Motive Power. Kansas City Star. The big steam and gasoline traction engines are superseding the horse and mulea In plowing the great wheat fields. One of the Kansas state offi cials went from Syracuse, on the Eanta Ke. to Topeka last week. He traveled all day and on that trip counted 61 traction engines at work plowing. Within the last week the country newspapers of Central Kansas reported the sale of 1 tractors for plowing and reported S7 farmers who would start their tractors this week. While there Is no way to get at the real figures on the numbers of tractors in Kansas, it is probably safe to say there are be tween ZiQ and S00 engines pulling plows In the state at the present time. The engines plow from 15 to 40 acres a day. according to the power and the number of plows In the gangs. The average slxe of the engines and plows Is 60-horsepower and a gang plow of 10 discs, each cutting 1 Inches in the fur row. A plow of that size will turn over about 30 acres of soli In the average working day. Most of the tractors are gasoline en gines. There are a few kerosene-burning engines coming into use. The steam traction engines are used gen erally for thrashing, but even these are being supplanted by the gasoline-driven machines. The steam tractor re quires a man to haul water and a man to haul coal, and two men to run it, one to feed the coal Into the furnace and another to watch tho machinery. The gasoline engine requires no hauling of water and one load of gaso line will keep It running a week or more, and only one man Is required to operate It. The smaller gasoline en gines, hauling eight plows, do not even require a driver, as the wheels on one side travel In the furrow made on the former trip and the steering wheel is not touched on the trip across the field. It costs 10 cents an -acre for gasoline and oil to run the gasollna-drlven trac tors and plow, plowing at 'the rate of 20 acres a day. It costs 14 cents in acre for coal and water and extra help In using the steam tractor, giving the same power and plowing the same amount of ground. It costs from BO to 80 cents an acre for plowing the same ground with horses. Prineville Power. Tnrned On. rRIN'EVrl.LE. Or- April 1. (Special.)
