way to Portland from San Francisco,
where the Chicago Grand Opera Com
pany has Just completed the most not
able engagement the Pacific Coast has
ever known, setting a new record for
the world in the way of musical en
thusiasm. Seats for all the four per

man Clay store, and the box office will

"WORK TO BE COXSIDERED.
Full Plans for Boulevard Improve
ment Not Worked Out and Ma
terial Problematical.
At a meeting of the Park Board Mon
day afternoon at i o'clock bids for the
hard-surfacing or macadamizing of the
south half of Terwllliger boulevard. In
South Portland, will bs opened and
considered. Practically all of the pav
ing companies have entered (bids for
the Improvement, which will be one of
the most Important to be put through
during the coming Summer.
The specifications as presented to the
various contractors are open, there be
ing no specified class of paving or mac
adamizing required. The figures are
to be given on the square yard basis
instead of on the basia of so much for
the entire Improvement.
As yet the full plans for the boule
vard have not been worked out and It
s uncertain just how wide the Im
proved surface of the road, will be. It
la expected that it will at least be
wider than any of the streets of the
city.
Ths section of the boulevward to be
improved Is 6000 feet In length, ex
tending from the head or Hamilton
avenue. In South Portland, to the
Slavin road. The boulevard follows
the crest of ths sldehills and when
completed will be one of the most at
tractive and scenic driveways in the
West. The second section is now be
ing constructed from Hamilton avenue
around the sldehills to the head of
Sixth street.
This work will be finished this
Spring. The boulevard will then be
opened from the head of Sixth street
south to the Slavin road, a distance of
over two miles. The construction work
has been heavy, owing to the deep ex
cavations and high bridges which have
been required. ,
Registration Day Named.
Next Wednesday -will be the day for
the registering of women from the
Peninsula and an effort will be made to
get out every woman of that district
who has not registered. The Woman's
Auxiliary of the North Portland Com
mercial Club will have a committee of
women at the Courthouse to receive
and instruct women how to register.
We want every woman on the Penin
sula to register," said Mrs. C. F. Nich
ols, president of ths auxiliary, "as there
are many Important issues on which
they will be called on to vote. We will
be at the Courthonse to meet them and
instruct them. If necessary."
