Mrs. Nelson sets forth that she has lived with him but three days and never was willingly his wife. It is stated that Nelson will be In Denver next week and that the suit U1 be (lied at that time. THREATS 3IADE BY XEXSOX Jack King Tells of Situation Between Daughter and Son-ln-Law. When Mrs. Nelson left Portland for Denver early this month, after a visit of five days with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Jack King, they knew that their only daughter was to sue for a divorce from Bat Nelson, who she declared had lured ber to Chicago by misrepresenta tion and forced a wedding ceremony practically by threats of physical vio lence. "Fay told us when she came home that when she left Denver with Nelson it was understood that tbey were to come to Portland to see us about the marriage." said Jack King last night. "One hour after getting on the train she discovered that they were not on their way to Portland, but to Chicago. Then when they arrived at Chicago she still refused to marry Nelson, declar ing that she did not love him. but he cried, threatened to kill himself and her. and fearful of the worst she con sented to the ceremony. "Fay never loved Nelson and never intended to marry him. but there she was. a young girl In a strange city with a half-crazed man imploring her to marry him. In her trouble she took what appeared to be the easiest course aod married him. "She held ber head high in Portland and tried to convince her friends thai vhe was happy, but she broke down be fore she left and confessed all to her parents." Fay King Nelson was born In Seat tle 23 years ago. She came to Portland with her parents when months old and lived here until she went to Den ver to accept a position as cartoonist on a newspaper, which was secured tot her by Selson. "I am confident that Nelson got that Job In Denver for her to get her away from her parents so that he could force Fay to marry him." declares King. the State Senate. It Includes a clause prohibiting contests "between human beings and animals," thus precluding possibility of bull fights in this state. A similar bill Is before the House. New York. Washington State College defeated Oregon by a score of 34 to 20 In their second Dasaetoau gam here tonight. The Oregon team fought fully as hard as In the first contest, but was outlucked by the visitors In basket shooting. The Norberners teat Hay ward's men by two points in each half, the score at the end of the first half being 13 to 11. During the latter part of the game the Northerners with a safe lead, and Oregon coming strong, assumed the de. fenstve and 'stalled" cleverly for time. The remainder of the game, however, was fast and desperately contested. In an effort to turn the tide of bat tle Hayward sent In his center. Fen ton, although the big player Is still dis abled by the bruised back which has kept him out of Oregon's recent games. Bonier waa high roan for the visitors, shooting five field goals. Ex-Secretary of United Mlneworkers, Xow In Congress, May Re ceive Appointment. WASHINGTON, Feb. 27. The House today agreed to the Senate amendments to tha bill creating in the Government a new department of labor to be su pervlsed by a Cabinet official. The bill will be In President lain nanus tomorrow, and If signed will Increase to ten members the Cabinet of the in- cominir Administration. Thus the post now held by Mr. Nagel will become that of Secretary of Com merce. It 1 believed Mr. Wilson has definitely picked Louis D. Brandeis for the nortfollo. and there is taut in Washington that the new place, that of Secretary of Labor, will be filled by Retiresentative Wilson of Pennsylvania, who was at one time secretary of the United Mlneworkers of America, and has the Indorsement of the American Federation of Labor. The selection of Brandels is said to be in accordance witb Mr. Wilsons desire to nave Progressive Republican among nls ad visers. James C McReynolds, of New York, Is regarded as Mr. Wilson s probable choice for Attorney-General. William C Redfield, of Brooklyn. Is known to stand high In the favor of the Presi dent-elect, but it is not known lor what portfolio he Is being considered. although It la regarded as probable he will enter the Cabinet. About the future of three portfolios Agriculture. Interior and War little known, and It Is hinted tnat tney will be filled by men whose names have not been generally mentioned heretofore. The Information as yet with respect to diplomatic posts Is meager. It be came known here today that Frederick C Penfield. of Philadelphia, and Henry N. A bill to pre vent prizefighting In Oklahoma passed RAINIER PARK FUND RAISED Senate Increases Appropriation bal Honsc Threatens to Cut It. OREGONIAN NEWS BUREAU, Wash ington, Feb. 27. Senator Jones today secured an amendment to the sundry civil bill still further increasing the ap propriation for Rainier Park reads to $150,000. He is fearful, however, that the House will not allow any Increase, as Democratic leaders seriously con sider taking up the suggestion of Rep resentatives Waxburton and Laflerty In favor of turning Rainier and Crater Lake parks over to Washington and Oregon, respectively. The Senate late last night voted down Senator Chamberlain's amendment to the public building bill increasing the appropriation for the Roseburg public building to $150,000. The Senate also voted down Senator Jones' amendment increasing the Seattle postofflce appro priation from $300,000 to $1,250,000. President Taft has signed the bill increasing pensions to Indian war vet erans and their widows to $20 a month. MODJESKI WILL LIVE HERE Noted Bridge Engineer Says He Pre fers Portland to Chicago. "Portland suits me much better than Chicago," said Ralph Modjeskl. the noted bridge engineer, who waa In the city yesterday to advise on the comple tion of the Broadway bridge, "and 1 hope soon to establish my permanent residence here. I like the city and the people much better than those of (he East." After Inspecting the new Broadway bridge yesterday he decided that a thorough test of the machinery of the west wing of the bascule span over the channel of the river can be made early next week. The east wing will be tested a few weeks later. He hopes to be present when the bridge finally is turned over to the city about April 16. Reinstatement Is Refused. F. A. White, a policeman who was dismissed for sleeping on duty, was denied .. reinstatement after a hearing before the police committee of the Executive Board yesterday. His attor ney and White himself admitted that the .charge was true, but extenuating circumstances were pleaded. White will appeal from the decision of the com mittee to the Civil Service Commission. Quake Frightens Ecnadoreans. GUAYAQUIL Ecuador, Feb. 17. Violent earthquakes occurred last night at Cuenca. Arabato and Rio Bamba. No serious damage was done, but the panic-stricken Inhabitants passed the remainder of the night in the street. Mr. Dunne's busi ness duties are such that he was forced to decline another term. He presented the name of William Schmitt. well known club athlete, and Bohmitt Is to handle the affairs of the coming season. The club also decided to stage the Portland interscholastic track and field championships, which are tt be held in May, probably May 24. Morris Dunne Is chairman. FOUR PERISH IN STORM Wind and Rain Do Heavy Damage In Three Southern States.' ATLANTA, ' Ga, Feb. 27. Four per sons perished, many were Injured and property worth many thousand dollars damaged by a severe wind and rain storm which swept Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Greatest property damage In Georgia was in the southern section of the state. At MlUedgevIlle, Ga., many build ings were demolished. Morrill, 20, son of a Washington, D. C, - attorney, and a farmhand from Rldgefleld. Waslu. wrote a letter to The Oregonian, warning the public that "the noted adventurer, Don Morrill." was in the city, he did so, he says, for the excitement. He got the desired sensation yesterday, when De tectives Hellyer and Howell arrested him at the Perkins Hotel and placed him in the City Jail on a charge of disorderly conduct. ' With him they took into custody Earl Cahoon, whom they charge with vagrancy consisting In his taking "loans" from the adven turer. Morrill, In his- letter, said that he noted. In passing the hotel, that Mor rill was sitting In the lobby, and on inquiry found that he was registered there. "What his object is I know not," he wrote, "but from my personal experi ence it will not be good for everyone." When the detectives went to inves tigate they found Morrill established in a sumptuous room with private bath, though he admitted that only a few days ago he was milking cows on a dairy ranch for a modest stipend.
