Delegation Arrlres From Eastern Oregon City to Confer With Tres Ident Farrell of O.-AV. R. & In an effort to convert Malheur and Harney Counties Into the dairymen's . paradise, city officials of Ontario and members of the Ontario Commercial Club have abandoned their advertising campaign on behalf of the Oregon ap ple albeit Ontario is the center of one of the best apple-growing districts In the Northwest end hereafter will con fine their sole efforts to attract farm ers with cows, cows and more cows. A. W. Trow, Mayor of Ontario, and W. IT. Doollttle. president of the Com mercial Club there, arrived in Port land yesterday and conferred with J. IX Farrell. president of the O.-W. R. tc N. Company, on the subject. Mr. Farrell. who Is. Interested In a dairy farm of his own, gave them much en couragement and promised whatever assistance he can give. The early completion of the O.-W. II. A X. line between Bend and Vale, which work Is now In progress, will bring; Malheur and Harney Counties Into closer touch with Portland and will afford a ready market for tho dairy products of those sections. In Inaugurating their campaign the Ontario officials addressed letters to 50.000 dairymen In various parts of the country pointing out the advantages of Eastern Oregon and offering them cheap feed and low land rentals as an Inducement to men who are willing to Invest In cattle. Letters also were sent to 2000 agricultural college stu dents and 2000 butter makers. "We are going to keep on growing apples," said Mayor Trow, "but we are going to subordinate fruit to cows. The apple exploitation has been over done. ORENCO WOMAN IN OFFICE Miss Edna Purdy Is Treasurer ot Oregon Electric Suburb. Orenco. Portland's enterprising little suburb on the Oregon Electric, now is a fully organized municipality, with all Its accompanying rights and privileges and tribulations and a full set of of ficers has just been given their re spective oaths. The following Is the list of city officials: Mayor, M. McDonald; Treasurer, Miss Edna Purdy; Marshal, Roy McDowell; members City Council. L. M. Boozer, A. Li. Brush, Robert Schneider, E. A. Mlncemoyer, H. V. Meade and Michael Do bra. . . VALE ROAD IS RUSHED NEW PART OF O.-W. It. & X. TO BE FINISHED THIS YEAR. 139-MiIo Stretch to Dog Mountain Well Under Way and Remaining Route to Bend Authorized. Now that the O.-W. R. & N. Company has taken over the road under con structlon between Vale and Bend, addl tlonal men, teams and equipment will be placed in service and every effort will be made to hasten construction, with the view of baying part of the road in operation before the end of the present year. Contracts for building that portion of the line between Vale and Dog Mountalp 139 miles west were let by the Oregon Short Line to the Utah Con struction Company before the project was given into the Jurisdiction of the O.-W. R. & N. officials. It Is probable that this portion of the new road will be finished this year. "We are concentrating all our efforts on the work now under contract," said J. D. Farrell, president of the O.-W. R. A N. Company, yesterday. "We have no Immediate plans for building f between Dog Mountain and . Bend, al though the line has been authorized." It is possible on account of Xhe greater convenience in handling ma terial and supplies, that the line west of Dog Mountain will be built out of Bend. Fifty-four miles of grading have been completed, and 34 miles more are under way. . Track has been laid from Vale a distance of 36 miles, and the track has been ballasted and completely surfaced for 26 miles. The principal tunnel is 39 miles west of Vale. It will be 2500 feet long and Is about half finished. Probably the most difficult feature of construction is pro vided by the necessarily frequent crossings over the Malheur River. Plans called for 17 such crossings. These 17 bridges will be built of steel on concrete or masonry foundations. Rights of way have been secured for 106 miles west of Vale, and rlght-or-way agents are still closing contracts with owners. The name "Oregon Eastern," which distinguished this line while It was be ing constructed by the Oregon Short Line, will be abandoned. Depots are being built where necessary. When this line Is finished the O.-W. R. & N. Company will have an easier and . shorter route between Portland and the East via Bend and Dog Moun tain. It will be about 75 miles shorter than the present route. Robbery Suspect Held. The case against Qua Glbbs, who gave his name as Cilbson. when ar rested, and Otto Balzlmer, who are charged with robbing Little Klein at the Bradford Hotel Tuesday night, was continued in the Municipal Court yesterday. Snows nalt View of Mines. GRANTS PASS, Or., Feb. 19. (Spe cial.) Dr. W. B. Plckrell, a large mine owner in the Sucker Creek district In this county, recently arrived from Spo kane to visit his mines, but on mak ing an attempt he found the sn'iw so deep in the mountains that It was inv possible for him to reach them. All went well until he reache-i Red Hill but from there up the mountain th9 snow gradually became deper. until it had reached a depth of over four feet on Grayback Mountain. The doc tor's business In Spokane called him "If I were required to compile a Blue Book of Portland and the Northwest, I would go into the lobby of the Imperial Hotel and make a list of the men I would find there." The Imperial lobby is always full the meeting-place of men from every section, to whom the Imperial is 'home" while they are in Portland. home, so ho decided to await and rc- ' turn later in the Spring. The snow being at such depth makes the placer miners jubilant, as it means almost a Summer's run for them.
