VANCOUVER. Wash.. Feb. 17. (Spe
cial.) To hear a lecture on modern
cemetery methods, the City Council to
night adjourned to a theater, where
Howard Evarts Weed, landscape archi
tect of Portland, spoke for 40 minutes.
Illustrating his talk with slides. Mr.
Weed la the author of the only book
devoted to cemeteries in the United
States.
The City Council wishes to Inform
Itself about cemeteries, as a new one is
to be bought.
Several unsuccessTul attempts have
been made to secure, land for a ceme
tery here during the past two years.
When a cemetery site outside of the
city limits Is considered, the people ob
ject, and when It Is suggested that the
present site be enlarged by the acqui
sition of seven acres, residents near
the cemetery object, and get out an In
junction to keep the Mayor from algn
Inar the warrant
The Supreme Court will hear a case
within a few weeks In which Mayor
Irwin refused to sign the warrant for
S10.900 to buy a tract outside the city,
and. on February 19, the Mayor will
be defendant In a case before the Su
nreme Court of Clark County to keep
him from signing another warrant for
$7500 to buy a tract adjoining the
present burial ground.
In the meantime there is not a lot
for sale In the city cemeteries.
David Chambers Arrested.
VANCOUVER. Wash- Feb. 17. (Spe
cial. David Chambers, wanted by the
Portland nollce for grand larceny,
charged with stealing $45. was arrested
In Vancouver Sunday night by Officer
Burkhart, on a description sent out
from Portland. Chambers will be taken
to Portland tonight
