At this time of the year and until he new clip cornea on the market the wool merchant gradually passes from an active seller to an active buyer of wool, and usually bis bull sentiment changes to bear sentiment, says the Wool and Cotton Re porter. Among dealers at the moment, we do not find any change of sentiment In progress. Tha reports from the West aro all of a kind. Buyers aro showing no disposition to contract for wool on tha aheep'a back and wool growers are fully aware of the statistical position of wool, and are not going to be the easy marks they were last year. They are showing every Inclination to wait until clipping time, before selling their wool. Considering the -various elements that are contributing to the uncertainties of the wool ttade. It would aeem folly to contract for -wool. One wool merchaut was over heard to remark that If wool dealers will contract for wool on the aheep's back dur ing tha present aeason. considering the pre. Vailing uncertainties, contracting Is here to stay. - ADDITIONAL HOP ORDERS KKCKIVF.D. Market I" Stranger Than It Has Keen Any Time This Scsmo. The hop market is steadily gaining in strength. Additional orders received from the East yesterday indicate the entry of new firms In the market, which only serves further to block proceedings. Growers are almost a unit In refusing to consider the bid. especially as regards prime These cannot be had from first hnds under 50 cents. A car ot mediums was reported aold at lS'i cents, but the particulars were lacking. ' Tbera la abundant evidence that a num ber of the larger Eastern brewers are in need of early shipped hops, and there is also reason to believe that a considerable short interest Is still uncovered. With the -available supply reduced to such small pro portions, it Is difficult to see how the mar ket can do otherwise than advance. The market waa dull during most of the session and there was neither enlarged outside buying nor a change In market factors of sufficient im port to acccount for a rise, amounting to more than three points in Union Pacific, two or more in Steel. Reading, Amalgamated and Canadian Pacinc and a point or over for a long list of other Issues. The rise apparently was due In large part to covering of short contracts. ' There wns no hurried buying, such as would Indicate a forced retreat of the bears, although, in the last hour "prices rose rapidly enough to Indicate a more urgent demand. - The copper stocks displayed considerable strength. The Loudon metal market waa steadier, following tile recent breaks. In terborough stocks were depressed by oppo sition to the proposed subway contracts. To bacco shares ivere strong. In this case particularly. -said Deich, pains had been taken to make sure that a cause of prosecution existed. H continued his protests until cut short the second time by the court with a curt statement that the case had been dismissed. Harris was arrested on complaint of N. Solomon, from whom he bought a diamond ring on the installment plan. It was alleged that lie had removed the ring from the state, constituting the offense-of larceny by bailee. Harris was arrested in Oakland and made a fight against extradition, end ing when Governor Johnson issued a warrant for his removal from the state. In court yesterday he had a number of witnesses to prove that the ring had remained here in his absence and that a friend had been given the money to pay an installment which he expected to become due in his absence. It was on this showing that he was discharged. . - Mapleton Quarry "Work Resumed. FLORENCE, Or., Jan. 21. (Special.) P R O O F Frequent Fluctuations In Chicago Pit With Good Gains Scored at Closing; Bell Cent Advance in Corn on Argentine Xews. ' CHICAOO, Jan. 21. Corn, advanclns a cent, led the crain markets upward today. Wheat opened higher because Liverpool failed to reflect the local weakness ot yes terday. A decline ensued on flatness in the spot market and then a recovery on re ports of export business. Then thero tvas another slump, -when it waa stated that the latter trafflo was In old Manitoba. In the end a report from New York that -to loads had been sold abroad and the pronounced strength of corn caused another upturn. The market had hardly started downward again when the close of the trading day came. Business waa active in the last hour. Corn was firm all day and closed at the top. Argentine news waa the important factor. Corn at Buenos Ayres advanced an extreme 1H. reflecting serious damage by heat and drouth. Oats strengthened, closing at the top. There was a better domestic call for cash oats, which wero unchanged to tic higher, and an improvement in the investment call. There was a slight letup in the demand which has Icept provisions on the upgrade recently, due to- liberal hog receipts at pri mary points, although they were '4.000 head under the receipts of a year ago.
