    MILKMEN TO COMPETE
VALLKY MEN" ORGANIZE TO

Xeir Creamery Will Be Started Here
In Thirty Itajf, Is Keport
Discrimination Charged.
ALBAXT. Or, Jan. 19. (Special.)
To establish a wholesale house In Port
land to market the products of the Wil
lamette Valley and Southern Oregon
creameries Is the purpose of the North
west Butter and Produce Association,
which was formed In this city yester
day at a meeting attended by 15 men
representing; 12 different creameries.
The association expects to establish
this selling-house in Portland within SO
days. The capital stock of the associa
tion was placed at J23.000 and it was
announced at the meeting that all of
this stock had been subscribed by val
ley ereamerymen.
Officers of the association were
chosen as follows: K. C. Eldredge. of
Independence, president; V. H. Kent, of
Eugene, secretary and treasurer, and
C. 11. Fraer, of Eugene; O. B. Neptune,
of Albany, and Chris Mhyre, of Junction
City, directors.
The valley ereamerymen assert that
they have been discriminated against by
the Portland ereamerymen In various
ways and that they are establishing
this wholesale house in Portland to
market their products on a uniform
basis for their own protection. The as
sertion was also made In the meeting
here yesterday afternoon that Portland
ereamerymen Import Eastern butter
and sell It with their own product as
fresh Oregon butter and that this but
ter Is sold at a price with which they
cannot compete.
Since the meeting held here about
two weeks ago. at which yesterday's
meeting was arranged for. a report has
gained some circulation that this anion
of valley ereamerymen is a movement
on their part to raise the price of but
ter throughout the valley. But the
ereamerymen deny this and assert that
the only purpose of the movement is
to protect themselves.
John D. Mickle. Oregon Dairy and
Food Commissioner, and E. T. Judd, re
tiring chief deputy in the Dairy and
Food Commissioner's office, were pres
ent at the meeting yesterday afternoon,
but merely discussed creamery and dairy
methods and did not participate in any
way In the organization of the new as
sociation. DEATH WARRANT IS SIGNED

NEWPORT. Or, Jan. 19. (Special.)
Had the plans of a number of New
port's leading citizens not been blocked,
the City Council would have received
a petition that would have made the
members doubt thoir own sanity. John
Granberg. chief engineer- of the Abbey
House, has been industriously secur
ing signatures to a petition demanding
that he be hanged.
Uranberg, who cannot read English,
was anxious to obtain a chief engineer's
license. He Interviewed Captain E. S.
Edwards. United States Inspector of
Hulls, or that purpose, and asked an
Abbey House employe to write out a
petition to that effect.
This wag wrote the following: "We,
the undersigned, believe that the bear
er. John Granherg, deserveB to be
hanged until he Is dead, dead, dead. In
stead of being discharged for neglect
ing his duties."
Uranberg took the petition, and, anx
ious not to be turned down, explained
the contents of the petition, as he
thought, before the person addressed
was allowed to read It. This gave them
their cue, and Granberg got more than
liO signatures before he met a minis
ter who Informed him of the contents.
The petition was not presented to the
Council.
