19 TIIE MORXIXG OKEGOMAX, FRIDAY. JANUARY 17, 1913. WHEAT IS CLIMBING Sales of Bluestem Are Closed at 91 and 92 Cents. CLUB IS TAKEN AT 85 CENTS l;iiiiie-s in White Wheat Worked for Kastern Account Coarse Grains Also Firm Another Advance in Flour Expected. Further Rains were made in wheat prices In the Northwestern markets yesterday. The demand was keen at all points and offer- tne. were Insufficient. Where sales were effective, the sellers were generally specu lators. as buyers found tt easier to secure nnliea from dealers than from larmers. Bluestem was the strongest feature of the market, although there was a sharp call for all other i varieties. Buyers paia equal to 81 cents.-for bluestem in the Walla TValla country, and the same milling grade sold In the local and Sound markets at 2 cents. For club n high as 85 cents was rald. Jn addition to the demand from millers. both at tidewater and In the Interior, wnicn Is the backbone of the market, there Is sla an Increasing Inquiry from Calirorni Several large sales of wheat for Eastern account were also closed yesterday. Oats and barley are firmer than they hare been for several weeks. Sales of oats were made on the local market at $-6-50 and and feed barley brought 2. Flour is firm at the recent advance, and as wheat continues to climb It la probable that higher flour prices will be announced before long. Local receipts In cars were reported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: Wheat Barley Flour Oats Hay Monday Ill 3 1 2 J Tuesday J Wednesday ... :l J " Thursday 1 J - i y.;:-ll ;m i; if" Tear ago '. SS38 r81 1491 1002 135 ROIOKS OF WOOL CONTRACTING Boston Dealers riace Small Credence in the Western Reports. rtumors or Western contracting have met with small credence In the market, says the Boston Commercial Bulletin, although there soems to be some foundation for the belief that efforts have been made to place certain clips under contract. In Arizona one clip has undoubtedly been contracted at 17 cents, but this was done probably under rather unusual circumstances. Efforts to buy wool on the sheep"s back in ITtah and Wyoming if made as reported at IS cents have met with small success, and there are those who declare the efforts mere dickering in the attempt to create a fair, situation at the start with an ultimate reaction to lower prices, if tariff revision should later make the market untenable. Many scout the whole idea of contracting as su foolhardy under present conditions and prospects as to be wholly out of the Ques tion. !-MI.I. IirSINKtiS IN" OREGON HOPS California Market Is More Active Insold Storks on C'oa4. According to Salem reports, a small amount of business was put through in hps. but In general the market in Oregon was quiet. There has been a good deal of activity In California, where 2IXX) bales of growers' hops have changed hands In the jat two days. Among tho California sales was a 300-bale lot of wheatlands at S'ii cents. Buyers have evidently turned to the Southern state, as they can operate with more freedom there than here. Corrected figures on the Pacific Coast stocks Id first hands are as follows: Bales. Oregon I'alifo-nla IV ashing ton 7..0O lt.."i'tO ' l.huo Total Trade In the contract market Is also quiet, but growers are very firm in their ideas. TCM PRICES ARE WORKING DOWN Mesidy Demand for Poultry Veal Is Lower Aguin. Egs prices axe gradually declining under more liberal receipts and unless the -weather bcooir.es worse, prices will continue to work downward. Orisons were quoted yesterday at 2 a 30 cents. There was a fair demand for poultry and prices were steady. The recent hl;rh quotation on dressed veal could not be maintained ar.d 1 cents was the top price yesleiday. Live calves, how ever, are no lower at the yards, where 0 cents Is still the rullnE price. Pork is fairly steady. Butter and cheese prices, are unchanged. DAY'S RANGE iS NARROW Coppers Strong on Covering Opera tions and Improvement in the Metal Trade Situation Euro pean Visible Decreases. NEW TORK. Jan. 16. There was no hint in the stock market today of the nervous ness which unsettled speculation in the early part of the week. Leading; stocks were de pressed early, but the market hardened be fore noon with L'nlon Pacific. Reading, Le hlgh Valley and the coppers leading the advance. The day's range was narrow and compara tively few of the active shares sold as much as a point above or below yesterday's close. The market weakened toward the close and net changes of the leaders were small. The ftrmness of the list today seemed to be due less to Improvement in sentiment than to the apparently over-sold condition of the market. American Agricultural fell, losing 44 points. Southern Pacific was under pressure at times, but its weakness was ignored by the general market. Strength of the copper shares, while per haps due In large part to covering opera tions, drew attention to signs of improve ment in the copper metal situation. In the London market a further recovery In the prices of standard copper was recorded, and the fortnightly European statistics showed a decrease In the visible supply ' Trading; fell off in bonds proportionately with stocks. The general tone was better. Total sales, par value, $1,755,000- United States bonds were unchanged . CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Reported hy -T. C. Wilson & Co., Lewis building, Portland. Early Market Is Scalping Affair With Prices Irregular1 Subsid ence of Export Demand. CHICAGO, Jan. 16. The grain markets today were nervous and irregular, but fin ished with a net" decline, due largely to a private cablegram stating that Adrianople'e fall Is Imminent. Provisions advanced. Until arrival of the Adrianople report gave legitimate impulse to sales, the wheat mar ket was a sort of glorified scalping affair. Speculators soM on the hard spots and took small profits on the soft ones, or vice versa The edpe was off the export business, and the trade was nervously waiting for influen tial news which in the end arived from Constantinople. Fluctuations in corn were a reflection of those in wheat. There was plenty for sale on bulges, while to all arpearance recoveries from the depressions necessitated careful nursing. Export trade subsided. There was more hedging of cash corn by sales of May. although the spot cereal was quoted to lc over yesterday. Oats declined with corn and wheat, and, like those markets, closed at the bottom. Selling was chiefly from longs. Sample oats were He to '4c higher. Provisions advanced Be to loc on a light run of hogs and small local stocks. - The leading futures ranged as follows: . WHEAT. Open. .05 .7 .90 High. t .95 .92 '4 .905s CORN". The selection of good bonds requires seasoned judgment, wide opportunity for investigation and purchase of securities, a thorough, experienced organ ization and strong financial connections. One of the most vital functions of the truly repre sentative bond house is to secure for clients, by the exercise of expert judgment, . investments affording maximum income, combined with minimum risk. We will be glad to furnish a list of carefully selected bonds yielding 4.35 to 7 upon application.
