Report That Russia Is Again Mass

a Higher Level Early News
of the Day Is Bearish. .
CHICAGO. Dec. 30. Statements that Rus
sia had resumed the massing of troops on
her southwestern frontier gave the wheat
market today a brisk upturn. The close
was nervous at figures varying from a shade
decline to 4c net gain.
More than 1.000.000 bushel, of wheat
were bought in a brief time by bullish
rneculAtors as a result of the warlike ad
vices from Russia and because of asser
tions that Roumania had begun again to
mobilize. The resulting advance carried
prices from the low point of the session to
the top
Increased -estimates of the Argentine ex
port surplus had previously wiped out an
early gain which the wheat market had
scored in consequence of light world ship
ments. A bulge In tne visioie supply toiai
was also tending to give the bears advan
tage, until sentiment had a quick change
on account or tne war news. -
Moisture over the Winter wheat belt pre
vented tho July option from sharing in the
general advance.
Wet weather put backbone into the corn
market, despite Increasing stocks.
Oats gave evidence of congestion in the
December delivery.
In the provision trade packers were cred
lted with absorbing nearby offerings.
