THE MORNING OREGON! AX, SATURDAY, DECE3IBER 28, 1912. GAYNQR REVIEWS ASH1NGT0N LIFE Mayor Says "Father of Our Country" Had Hot Temper and Bad Teeth. JUDGMENT IS HELD SOUND Lincoln Said to Have Been Forced to Sign .Emancipation Proclama tion Ills Philosophy Put Forward as Best Trait. NEW TO UK, Dec. 27. (Special.) Mayor Gaynor has taken time from the police Investigation to refute the utter ances of certain clerical persons with "wilderness" minds and also certain . "rat-bag editors- and to put George Washington. Abraham Lincoln and the Declaration of Independence where they belong-. The Mayor was asked to review a book by Rev. Robert W. McLaughlin, of Park Slope Congregational Church, called "Washington and Lincoln." He did. He wrote Dr. McLaughlin a let ter which was made public today. Washington's Temper Explosive. "The general Impression of Wash ington." observes the Mayor. In put ting the stamp of his opinion on the "Father of his Country" Is largely mythical. We think of him as a good man. who told the exact truth always, and never got angry. 'This Is all right in the main, but as a matter of fact he was of warm blood and prone to passion, as his contempor aries agree. He is even known to have sworn like a trooper at times. And hjs face was pitted, and he had bad teeth. and other physical Imperfections. "He was not the equal In knowledge of history, economics and government of the men who surrounded him; but after he had listened patiently to their counsels his Judgment was safe and sound. Llacola'a Philosophy Landed. "The character of Lincoln was dif ferent. He signed the Emancipation Proclamation. That was a momentous fact In history. But It bad to be almost extorted from him. "Unlike" the case of Washington, those around him, and especially mem bers of his Cabinet, did not greatly re spect him. Some of them called him an old fool. He was blamed for every blunder or failure of the Generals in the field. The newspapers, including practically all of them in New York City, condemned him as' Incompetent and small. But he had more philosophy than all of his advisers and Generals and critics put together. And therein was his greatness." In referring to the Declaration of In dependence, the Mayor says that this has always seemed to him to have been an event not so heroic as generally considered.
