Completing- a session marked by Im
portant action for the betterment of
dairy conditions In this state, the Ore
gon Dairymen's Association adjourned
Its 23d annua convention late today.
More Interest was manifested at this
session in dairy problems and there was
a more whole-souled desire for the Im
provement of dairy conditions and the
development of the Industry in this
state apparent than at any former conr
vention of the association.
J. M. Dickson, of Shedds.( was elected
president of the association for the year
in the annual election today. Charles
Kunze. of Tillamook, was elected first
vice-president, and Edward Cary, of
Carlton, second vice-president. F. I
Kent, of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege, of Corvallis. was re-elected secre
tary and treasurer.
Tillamook was selected for next
year's convention, but the date was left
to the officers.

cream exhibits was not completed in
time to make the awards before the

who were the judges of the entries on
all points except bacteria, completed
their work, but It was necessary to
send samples of the exhibits to the lab
oratory of the Oregon Agricultural Col
lege to make the bacteriological count,
and this will not be completed for a day

John D. Mlckle. of Forest Grove. Ore
gon Dairy and Food Commissioner
elect, was the leading speaker at the
session this forenoon. He talked on
-Dairy Regulation." and his address
was ono of the strongest of the con
vention. Following this address there
was a general discussion of the tuber
culin test, and the remainder of the
morning session was devoted to the
election of officers and the presentation
of the secretary's report.
At the closing session of the conven
tion E. R. Stockwell made an address
and Dr. James Withycombe, of the Ore
gon Agricultural College, discussed
Better Sires." Most of ths afternoon
session was devoted to a discussion of
needed legislation and- the adoption of
resolutions .summarizing-the work of
the convention.
Resolutions Are Important.
They included In their resolutions a
request to the Legislature to appropri
ate 130.000 for prizes for the Oregon ex
hibitors at the Livestock Show. Panama-Pacific
Exposition, San Francisco,
to Increase the premium fund of the
Oregon State Fair from $15,000 to $20.
000 to abolish district fairs and aid
county fairs instead, and to paBS the
livestock sanitary bill passed at the
last session and vetoed by Governor
West.
The convention also adopted resolu
tions favoring a law "making It obliga
tory that all scales and measures be
submitted to a 'sealer of weights and
measures' before they be used to deter
mine the value of any food products
bought or sold within the state, and
that tne omce or seaier oi
measures' be created," also favoring "a
law appropriating a sufficient sum to
cover one-half of the expense of oper
ating a demonstration farm in each
county In the state, and that a pro rata
proportion of this sum be used for each
of these several demonstration farms
only upon the appropriation by the
county of a like sum."
MRS. BEBEE LAID AT REST
Vancouver Elks Conduct Impressive
Funeral of Oregon Woman.
VANCOUVER, Wash," Dec. 20. (Spe
cial.) With a large number of friends
present, chiefly Elks and women of
the Elks, the funeral of Mrs. Sarah
Beebe, wife' of Guy Beebe. of Castle
Rock, was held this afternoon at 3
o'clock. Rev. Ellsworth B. Collier,
rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church,
officiated. Special music was fur
nished by Mrs. Lulu IVawara, organist,
and Misses Laura Brown and Beatrice
Williams. Mrs. Clement Scott and
Messrs. Wilson and Rogers, members
of the Episcopal cholr
The pall bearers were Mayor Charles
S. Irwin, past exalted ruler of the Elks;
Lloyd Du Bols, president of the Van
couver Commercial Club and chaplain
of the Elks; James J. Padden, past ex
alted ruler; John Secrlst, Chief of Po
lice; George B. Thomas and Louis Wise.
Interment was in the city cemetery.
The Elks sent a large floral piece
and the flowers sent by friends were
many and beautiful.
WOMAN'S INJURY IS FATAL

Mrs. A. Ii. Smith la Breast. .
WENATCHEE, Waslu. Dec. 20.
(Special.) Struck in the breast by the
dangling end of a wire clothes line
three weeks ago. Mrs. A. L. Smith, aged
2. died here today from the results of
the injury. When the accident occurred
Mrs. Smith was hanging out clothes.
The protruding end of the wire line
struck her In the breast, seemingly
causing no more than a scratch. Two
weeks ago Mrs. Smith's condition be
came serious and she was taken to
Portland. Doctors said she had heart
failure. She was brought here yester
day and Dr. McCoy discovered a broken
rib. The flesh had become poisoned and
an unsuccessful operation was per
formed. How two feet of dangling
clothes line striking her body could
break a rib Is the puzzle local physt
cians are trying to solve.
Mrs. Smith was a pioneer of Oregon
and wife of A. L. Smith, of Ephrata.
ROAD BILL TO BE DRAFTED

resentatives of the Oregon Hotelmen's
Association. Oregon State Grange and
the Country Life Commission arrange

state road bill for presentation to the

islature. Fred Groner. representing the State
Grange, and W. J. Barker, representing
the Country Life Commission, took the
same grounds declaring that there was
no question of the need of such a bill
and that It would receive almost uni
versal support If it eliminated special
favors to certain districts.
One point that appeared objection
able to the Btate Grange was the ap
pointment of a state engineer or su
perintendent at a salary that would
secure a competent and capable man.
The levy of a state tax to carry out
the measure. Independent of County
Court supervision was also a bone of
contention, but It was shown that there
was little actual difference of opinion
and a new bill will be drafted that will
be acceptable to these Interests for
joint presentation to the Legislature.

Parties sent out by the French govern
