HEW FIBRE SOURCE
Hop Vines, Heretofore Burned,
May Be Utilized.
WILL SAVE GREAT WASTE
Discovery Said to Have Been Made
by a Gorman Clirnitst Wliicli AM 11
Develop a Valuable By
Product of Coast Yards.
FiiT. north about STT.n.ooo. can be made
fr.im th hop vinos srown on the. Pacific
"Tat which are annually destroyed after
-ch harvest. This Is the claim made by
several hop men who have been liivei-tigat-lnc
a process discovered by Dr. A. Helta, a
German experimenter, who was In the cltj
a few das ago.
Dr. Kelts, who is a practicing physician
at Tacoma. has been working on the proc
f,s tor several years. He began his inves
tigations with German hop vines before
M.mlm to this country, and has contlnuea
his stadles with the American plant. The
United states Department of Agriculture
has also been experimenting; with hop vines
In the attempt to extract a marketable fl
ber. Dr. Reitx. who claims to have been
successful In his efforts, accomplishes the
desired result by means of a chemical proc.
e-. What this process is. however, he
keeps a secret.
There are about 4.-,.000 acres of hop land
In bearing on the Pacific Coast. The vine
Is said to yield 2S per cent of fiber, ami
the amount of fiber to the acre Is estimated
at 5.V pounds. Each hill, which contains
three vines, has about 50 feet of vine to the
hill, and there are 700 hills to the acre.
All this vine, after the hops are picked,
goes to waste. If this waste matter can be
saved and turned Into money, it will mean
nut only a bit profit to the manufacturers,
but will be a source of Income to the farm
ers as well. The vines that hare hereto
fore been burned will pay for a good part
of the cultivating expense.
Tests that have been made In this city
of the hop fiber Indicate that It can be used
for sewing twice (or sacks and such uses to
which soft fibers are put. It is not likely
to take the place of manlla or sisal In rope
making. The tests have not been concluded,
however, and the exact value of the fiber
Is not known.
Several Portland, Salem snd Tacoma hop
men are Interested In the matter, and If it
Is demonstrated that a marketable fiber can
be made successfully and economically from
hop vines, a company will be formed to
manufacture the product.
WHEAT PRICKS ARE HOLDING WELL
Small 8uiorM Paaeias; In Local and Coun
try Markets.
There Is not much trade passing In ths
wheat market and not much is expected
during the remainder or the month, but
prices are being well maintained. Club was
quoted at IS cents yesterday and blucstem
at Si cents. The latter sort is becoming
scarce and Is relatively firmer thun the
other varieties.
The farmers of the Northwest are Indif
ferent sellers and do not seem disposed to
let go except at higher prices. Their bull
ishness la no duubt due In large part to the
snia'lness of stocks In the country. Re
ceipts at tide water so far this season have
been close to 30.000.000 bushels, and on the
basis of a 53.o0O.00O ' bushel crop, which
most of the dealers figure, this will leave
only about 9,000.000 bushels In the coun
try, allowing for 16,000.000 bu-shels home
requirements and feed. The unsold, stock
is small for this time of year, especially if
the Oriental and California demands con
tinue large in the next few months, as is
expected.

BIG PROJECTS START SOON
Work of Reclaiming 200,000 Acres
in Umatilla County Planned.
UERM1STON', Or7bee. 18. (Special.)
Offices have been opened at Echo for
the commencement tho first of the year
of work in the development of two new-big-
irrig-ation projects in Umatilaa
County.
The larger is the Paradise project
which wiH reclaim f.0,000 acres of land
north of Echo, a part of which is now
classed as wheat land. The main canal
to carry water to this tract will tap
the Umatilla River east of Pendleton
and follpw the hills north of that city
until it empties into two bis reservoirs
near the land.
The other tract Is now covered with
bunch grass, and is east of the famous
Butter Creek alfalfa region. Its sup
nlv of water will come from Camas
Creek, in the extreme southern end of
Umatilla County. This system will re
quire a long tunnel through the divid
ing bills that form a watershed of the
Umatilla and John Day Klvers and win
reclaim an area of 20,000 acres. It is
known as the Tell Irrigated District.
Besides these, two enterprises the
United States Government will com
mence work early next Spring- on the
neighboring area of sagebrush known
as. the west extension and covering
about 40.000 acres lying westward from
Hermiston 30 miles along the Columbia
to the little station of Castle Rock.
The total cost of these three projects
will be over J7.000.000, and the total
new acrea reclaimed will be over 100,
000 acres. This added to the lands in
Western Umatilla County now already
in course of reclamation, will create a
district of 200,000 acres. Much of this
land has already been improved in al
falfa and fruit, and its productivity al
ready demonstrated. It adjoins the Co
lumbia River with none of it more than
20 miles distant from navigation, and
the citizens of this territory expect
much from the completion of the Celilo
and the Panama Canals.
