INTERMARRIAGE OF

Southerner Denounces Law
Permitting Blacks to Have

MEASURE NOT VOTED UPON
Georgian Deplores Procedure Which
Allows "Brown-Hued, Thick
Lipped, Blnck-Sklnned, Brutnl
Ilearted African" License.
WASHINGTON. Dec. 1L.A denun
ciation of the legal procedure under
which be termed a "brown hued. black
skinned, thick lipped, brutal hearted
African can walk into an office of the
law and demand altf edict guaranteeing
him legal wedlock to a white woman,"
was one of many sensational features
of a speech in the House today by
Representative Rodde'nbury, of Georgia,
in favor of a resolution he had intro
duced to prohibit intermarriage of
whites and negroes.
The measure, a direct result of the
recent marriage of Jack Johnson, the
negro pugilist, with a white girl, did
not get to a vote, but it enlivened a
dull day's proceeding and incidentally
aided in a filibuster of Representative
Goldfogle of New York that sent the
Burnett illiteracy test immigration bill
' over until January.
Mr. Roddenbury prophesied that the
legal sanction of mixed marriages
ultimately might bring this country to
a conflict. In Chicago, he said, not
only is the white slave traffic carried
on, "but the white girls of this coun
try are made the slaves of an African
brute, sanctioned by the laws of the
state and solemnized by a form of the
marriage ceremony."
LAWYERS QUIT JOHXSOX'S CASE
Xegro's Marriage With White Girl
Causes Break With Attorneys.
CHICAGO. Dec. 11. Jack Johnson's
attorneys. W. G. Anderson and B. H.
Wright, both negroes, asked the United
States District Court today that their
names be . stricken from he records as
counsel for the fighter. The lawyers
said that Johnson's recent marriage to
Lucille Cameron, a white girl, was dis
approved by them to an extent that
they do not care any longer to be
associated with htm.
Wright and Anderson represented
Johnson in the white slave cases yet
to be heard.
Johnson appeared in the Municipal
Court today to answer to a charge of
assault and battery brought by a news
paper photographer, whom Johnson is
alleged to have struck witn a cane
when the photographer tried to take
a picture when Johnson was locked in
the Countv Jail.
Testimony that Johnson had struck
with his cane and Injured the photog
rapher was given and Johnson has just
taken the stand in his own defense
when court adjourned until tomorrow.
The negro pugilist was in a bad tem
per and several times had to be ordered
to be silent when he engaged in per
sonalities with the plaintiff's attorneys.
