NORTH CHINA IS BUYING

Selling Freer in the Country.
Th export flour trade is of fair proportloi
at the Dwent time and full pricw are ob
telnable. Orders are coining- in mainly for
Xorth fhina shipment and some business
is also being done with the Japanese pun.
There is practically no business under way
with Hongkong, the demand from that
quarter, for some reason, having ceasea.
. Domestic trade, as usual at this time of
year, is quiet, but prices on patents are
being fully maintained. Mill feeds are firm
at the recent advance.
A somewhat freer selling movement is re
ported in the wheat district. This, to
aether with the easier markets East and
abroad, has given values in the Northwest
n weaker tone than prevailed last week. Tne
same prices are being offered, however, but
buyers are not keen to take noia.
Oats and barley price are also un
changed with but small volume of business
passing.

Foreign crop conditions are summarised
by the Liverpool Corn Trade News as xoi
lows:
I nited Kingdom There has been some
land unsown to wheat as a result "
rnnftnued wet weather.
France The crop outlook Is generally
favorable, although some land is still un
seeded in the north and west. Supplies of
native wheat are larger, witn prices easier.
Foreign wheat and oats is being Imported
freely for home consumption.
Germany Large yields are confirmed, but
the quality la rather poor. The demand for
fore Jim wheat is slow. The weather Is
seasonable.
Russia The crop outlook is satisfactory.
Bad roads are hindering supplies arriving
from the Interior. Shipping on the Aioff
Is about finished. The condition ot corn J
bri. The weather Is seasonable.
Koumania The land is too soft for sowing
. and a fair decrease In acreage is expected.
Arrivals from tho Interior are small. The
condition of corn is bad.
Australia Our agent estimates the crop
of wheat of the commonwealth at tu.aw,
ih0 bushels this rear.
India The recent rains failed to reach
some parts, but generally conditions are
normal, with the weather at present gen
erally favorable.
Italr In the south there is active buy
tng of foreign wheat, elsewhere dull. The
weather is seasonable.
THE HOP MARKET IS NOW BLOCKED
Kerent Heavy Buying Put Growers Oat
of Helling Mood. ,
Business In the local hop market yes
terday slowed down materially. This was
not because of any cessation in the de
mand but because of -the practical with
drawal of sellers fro"m the market. The
blocking of trade was the natural result
of the recent activity. Growers still hold
Jng hops ask more money and buyers are
not disposed to advance their bids. It Is
uncertain how long the deadlock will last,
but. in view of tho very small quantity
rt hops remaining unsold it would look as
if the holders hud the best of It.
Dealers who have been making a canvass
of the unsold crops aie confident that not
over 10.00O bales remain In first hands In
' Oregon. This compares with a stock of
about 6000 bales held In the state one year
go. California has about 20,000 bales
- compared with 8000 at this time last year.
Washington growers hold 4000 bales against
2000 bales a year ago. . ....
POIXTRY RECEIPTS LIGHT THIS WEEK
Prices Are Improving. With sv Better De
mand Eggs Accumulating.
Poultry receipts so far this week have
been lighter than lat week and with a mod
crately good demand prices have shown
some improvement. Chickens sold readily
yesterday at i;i?13H cents.
Arrivals of dressed hogs ha.ve fallen oft
sharply, but the retail trade is fully sup
plied and In the absence of demand, the low
price is still quoted.
There were signs of an accumulation of
local eggs In some quarters, and asking
prices were reduced.
Cheese Is moving out better thsn last
neek and the tone of the market Is better.
There was no change In the butter situation.
(OOD SCFPLY OF PKODt'CE ON (STREET
Demand Is Principally for Bananas and
Oranges Florida Fruit on Sale.
Front street was well stocked with
varieties of fruits and vegetables yesterday.
but buying was on a rather moderate scale.
The demand "waacIilefTy for bananas and
for oranges. California navels are holding
firm. A car of Florida oranges and grape
fruit is on sale, the former at S4 and the
latter at $4.25.
A car of mixed vegetables and a car of
celery are due today.
Mohair Markets Are Quiet.
Arrivals of Texas mohair in the Eastern
markets are more numerous, but little has
yet been sold. No foreign hair of any mo
ment Is being Imported and prices for spot,
while firm, show no advance. .
The English market Is dull and uninter
esting, new export orders being a minus
quantity and eld business being moderate,
exports of yarns being particularly slow.
Advicei from the Cape indicate a fairly
steady movement of .Winter hair, chiefly
for Fnglish account, at Sd. Winter kinds
bringing 14 4d. No news is heard from
Constantinople, where all hores have been
closed on account of the war. Some little
realizing on Constantinople account Is re

UPWARD TURN OF PRICES
Leading Issues More Than Recover
Their Forenoon Losses Favor
able Trade Report Issued by
the Steel Corporation.
NEW YORK, Dec. 10. After another se
vere break, which forced quotations to a
new low level for tb protracted downward
movement, the stock market rallied effec
tively today.
The recovery was not reg-arded as indica
tive of a marked change in sentiment. The
downward movement was begun on the
rendition of the .Harriman decision and
extended beyond a point to which the in
fluence of that decision may be said to
have made itself directly felt, and there
has been no specific development since that
time to account for the continued pressure.
There was no apparent reason for a
change in sentiment today, and it was the
opinion of many market observers that the
rally was due in large part to over-extension
of short selling.
The ooenlnsr was weak and through the
morning there was a steady stream of sell
ing orders, which at times almost demoral
ised the market. Xo effective resistance
was offered and stocks were unloaded In
Increasing volume. Steel sold down to 64H,
Union Pacific to 161, Reading to ltfo'i, and
Amalgamated to 7u!4- Among the jess ac
tive issues declines were more severe, ex
tending to 15 points in Lackawanna and 11
in national .Biscuit.
The turn in the market came with th
noon hour and prices mounted steadily until
Steel, Reading and a number of other im
portant issues showed net gains of a point
or more. Just btore the close tne maritei
became heavy, although prices did not re
lttriSA to th Ion- nnlnt of the dav.
The Increase of 2r8,000 tons In the United
States Steel Corporation's unfilled tonnage
was regarded as a satisfactory snowing, nut
was without influence on the market in Its
present unsettled state.
The bond market moved in close sym
pathy with stocks, but some of the active
issues showed less recuperative power. j.o
tal sales, par value, 2.9:o,00Q. United
States bonds were unchanged on call.

CHICAGO, Deo. 10. Wheat mad. a nat
ural rally today after tho recent continuous
decline. Notwithstanding that wheat early
went under the season's previous low-prioe
level, final quotations . were at practfcaliy
the top for the day. The market showed
better rallying power than had been seen
in some time. Traders generally seemed to
have anticipated the bearish effect of the
Government report. There were rains in
Northern Argentina, an increase in -the Eu
ropean visible supply and a less favorable
outlook regarding foreign vcrops. The open
ing varied from 54c lower to a shade ad
vance. Afterward the market declined fur
ther, owing to large receipts Northwest, but
again turned upward. The close was firm,
with May 54c net bigher.
Lightness of country offerings made corn
firm.
Oats rose on account of continued small
arrivals.
Plentiful supply of hogs brought about
