11 THE MORNING OKECJONTAN, MONDAY. DECEMBER 9, 1912. I 5 P1TCHE OS BOUGHT? McCredie Quoted as Saying He Has Star Performers. RECENT DEAL LENDS COLOR Portland Manager, In San Francisco Report, Said to Have Announced Intent to Hold Only Higgln botbam for ISIS Team. "While I was back at the Milwaukee convention I closed deals for nve ster ling pitchers who will make my pitch ing Eta ft the best In the league. I also closed negotiations for two first-class innelders. I am going to tear my pres ent pitching staff to pieces, Higgin hothani being the only man I shall re tain." Th ahorn Is an excerpt from a letter supposed to have been sent by Walter JlcCredie, Portland baseball manager, to a San Franciscan, appearing In Abe Kemp's column 6f the San Francisco Bulletin. Kemp wondered long at Mc Credie's "almost deathlike" silence and "sedentary career" regarding the reor ganization of the Beavers, and then sprung the letter from "Mac" to a "per sonal friend in san rranciscu. Assuredly McCredie spent not all his time In the Middle West Investigating th croD conditions on his orotner Tnn farm, as was conclusively proved by the announcement of the purchase of "Rip" Hagerman. the giant hurler from Lincoln, preceded by the news from Toledo of the release of Inflelder McCormick and First Baseman Derrick to Portland, but -It seems Improbable that the nve sterling pitchers and two first-class Innelders had been clinched for the 1913 Beavers prospective champions while McCredie was on his trip. "We will have two or three more pitchers like Hagerman report to us at training camp. aeciarea aicv-reaie Saturday afternoon when talking of the purchase of the Lincoln star for $2500. "We are after a couple of good ones and if we land them there will be no occasion for a single Portland fan to worry about the outcome of the 191i campaign." "As long as we have the ability to borrow money we will grab as many men like Hagerman as we can, humor ously commented President McCredie on the purchase of the Lincoln husky. "We Daid K500 for him, but will get this back bv a major league draft next season If he proves as good as we think he will. True, we would lose on him should he prove a 'bloomer.' but a sale In excess of the $2500 draft price not improbable If he makes good as we expect him to. Is a possibility. . The Pacific Coast League will hold its first annual meeting In Sacramento to day and tomorrow. In addition to the scheme for the new class D cl cuit. which Is given as the reason for the rhane-e in the date from February, schedule, and the formal granting of rjermission to place a Northwestern League club In Portland, the directors will have the Walters syndicate oase ball rharsres to wrangle over. The class D scheme is nothing but a "farming" proposition for the coasters. CCf CLUB TRIES XETVV METHOD Members Shoot Clay Birds With Backs to the Traps. A new "wrinkle" was tried at the Portland Gun Club's weekly shoot at Kenton yesterday, the men standing with their backs to the traps and shoot ing at clay birds as they passed over their heads. HOOD RIVER, Or.. Dec. 8. (Special.) While but few games have been played with the teams of neighboring Hies, the basketball squads jt the Hood River High School and the Co lumbia Athletic Club team have had some Interesting games among them selves. In the best game of the season the latter won Friday nlsht by a score of 18 to 15. Many of the Columbia players were members of the high school teams in former years. The Co lumbia lineup was composed of Wood and Noble, guards; Button, center; Fran I and Shay, forwards. The Hood River team. McGulre and Johnson, guards; Swartout, center; Blagg and McDonald, forwards. Mount Angel Juniors Victorious. MOUNT ANGEL . COLLEGE. Mount Angel.. Or, .Dec. . (Special.) The, Mount Angel College Juniors and In dependence High School Basket-ball teams met on the local floor today. The result was an easy victory for the Mount Angel Juniors by a score of 45-11. Tnough the Angels were minus the assistance of their two strong guards. Sullivan and Kronberg, until the last five minutes of play, the team nevertheless played a brilliant game. The work of Beck, at forward, and Ryan, at center, was especially pro nounced. For Independence, Nix. the center, was the only man that was able at times to solve the bewildering passing of the Juniors. Camas Gnn Club Holds Shoot. CAMAS. Wash., Dec. 8. (Special.) The Camas Gun Club, organized dur ing the week, received a trap and 5000 clay birds from Portland last night and held Its first shoot today. Several Port land and Vancouver visitors attended the shoot and many good scores were made. The club has a membership of V SO. with the following officers: W. BOY HOLDS BOXING TITLE Charles Galbraith Hobbles Into Port land on Crutches 14 Days After Leaving Spokane Hopes to Walk to San Francisco. Charles S. Galbraith, Spokane's one legged athlete who Is on a vacation walk from the Inland Empire metrop olis to San Francisco, 1S00 miles away, arrived in Portland at 2 o'clock yester day afternoon with his hiking pal,.W. R. Tuttle. The duet walked In to. the Portland Y. M. C. A. Just 14 days and two hours after leaving Spokane, cov ering a distance of approximately 434 miles at the rate of 31 miles a day. Despite Galbralth's ambition to swing a pair of crutches over the ties between Spokane and San Francisco, lie will abandon the Journey here unless he se cures a vaudeville engagement to de fray the expenses of the walk from Portland to the canrornia city. miles away. The boys started from Spokane with 8115, a sum they believed sufficient to tide them over until they reached their destination. But the high cost of living in the small towns en route depleted the bank roll until only 828 is left. Galbraith refuses to apply to his father, a Spokane contractor, for financial assistance, and unless money can be earned In Portland within a week or two. will' return to Spokane, leaving Tuttle to continue southward alone. The one-legged athlete shows no ill effects of the long and tiresome walk, but declares that he Is in better con dition today than when he started, shaking off a heavy cough after three days of tough walking out of Spokane. A sore foot, blistered hands, and ten der arms have not robbed him of his enthusiasm. Broken Crutches Impede- Trip. The boys left Spokane two weeks ago Sunday noon. Three miles out of Spo kane a crutch broke and they retraced their steps to the starting point to purchase another "stick." Twice again a crutch broke under the strain of con stant and hard wear, necessitating a ride of four miles on one occasion and 25 miles, out of their way to Walla Walla, anotner. The best day's work of the two weeks was 44 miles, between Umatilla and Ar lington. The long stretches were ne gotiated between walla walla ana Hood River, the boys walking from 8 o'clock in the morning until 10. o'clock at night on three different days.; . The railroad ties were followed over more than 400 miles of the trip, the lads coming into Portland on' the O. W. R. & N. right-of-way. Galbraith went to sleep too close to a fire at a Snake River camp, one of the two nights spent out of a bed. and his clothing caught afire. Several holes in canvas, blanket and trousers resulted. Crippled Boy aa Athlete. Galbraith, despite the loss of a leg eight years ago by a bone disease, is an athlete. He holds the 135-pound boxing championship of the Spokane Y. M. C. A., worked his way through three rounds of the Inland Empire tennis tourney last Summer, is a good swim mer, clays basketball, handball, fences. and does fairly well in field events. He goes four feet, six Inches In the run ning high Jump, and broad Jumps nine feet, six inches, taking great hops to the line for his leaps. Galbraith boxed a two-round draw with Reed, the Spo-- kane Amateur Athletic Club boxer who appeared in the Pacific Northwest As sociation championships here last Spring. The one-legged lad Is 21 years of age. stands six feet, one Inch, and has the physique or a man or nil pounas.
