SERVICE
TO EAST
E
Portland Officials Attending
Railway Conference at
Salt Lake City.
CHICAGO FLYER IS PROJECT
Intimation Given That No. 8, bear
ing at 8 F. 31., May Be Replaced
by Local to Tjtah City With
. Extra Near Midnight.
Improved train service between Port
land and the East and between Port
land and Salt Lake City may be the
result of a conference of Union Pacific
traffic officials now beinir held at Salt
Lake City, which J P. O'Brien general
manager of the O.-W. R. A N. Com
pany, and William McMurray, general
passenger agent of the same road, are
attending.
The present meeting, contrary to the
published report, is not a result of the
receni Supreme Court decision declar
ing illegal the merger of the Union
Pacific and the Southern Pacific sys
tems, as it was called before that de
cision was rendered.
While the regular Winter schedules
will be considered. It is reliably re
ported that a new fast train between
Portland and Chicago, leaving here at
midnight or 12:30 A. M., will be one re
sult. This train, it is believed, will be
in addition to the present service and
will satisfy a demand that has been
growing more general of late.
Should the new midnight train be
authorized It would take the place of
No. , now leaving here at 8 P. M. It
Is thought, however, that the running
time would be "shortened" so that the
time of arrival in Chicago would be
the same as at present.
Salt Lake Train Mar Be Added.
If this new Chicago-Portland service
is provided, additional service will be
established to take care of the Salt
Lake City and intermediate business.
The Intention is to put on a train leav
ing here at approximately the same
time as No. 8 leaves no 8 P. M. and
to operate between Portland and Salt
Lake City only. Corresponding west
bound service, of course, will ,be pro
vided. ' ...
When Gerrlt Fort, passenger traffic
manager for the Union Pacific and Ore
gon Short Line, was in Portland some
time ago he said that a service such as
outlined was then in contemplation.
Negotiations were In progress at that
time for operating the Harriman trains
east of Omaha via the Milwaukee line
instead of over the Northwestern. This
change was effected last Summer and
part of the Portland-Chicago service
now is operated over the Milwaukee
tracks.
Meanwhile business between the
Coast and the Middle West has b2en
growing and the volume of passengers
handled on No. 18 and No. 17, wihch are
the fast eastbound and westbound
trains, has been growing and the ne
cessity for additional fast service has
become apparent.
Better Freight Service Desired.
"I don't know what they will do at
Salt Lake City,- said R. B. Miller, traf
fic manager for the 0.-W. R. & N. Com
pany, yesterday. "They have a num
ber of traffic matters, both freight and
passenger, under consideration."
Harvey E. Lounsbury, general freight
agent for the O.-W. R. & N. Company,
also is attending the Salt Lake meet
ing with tne oDject oi oduhumis .umc
improved freight schedules between
Portland and Eastern points.
Operating and traffic heads of the
Oregon Short Line and the Union Pa
cific are meeting with the Portland of
ficials. The conference Is expected to
continue two or -three days.
OFFICIALS REACH SALT LAKE
Vice President Monroe Denies Re
organisation Is to Be Topic.
SALT LAKE CITY, Dec 4. A party
of Harriman lines officials, who will
hold a meeting here tomorrow, arrived
tonight headed by J. A. Monroe, vice
president in charge of traffic of the
Union Pacific Railroad. Other parties
from the East and Northwest will ar
rive tomorrow morning.
In spite of rumors from apparently
authentic sources, Mr. Monroe denied
tonight the report that the meeting to
morrow was for the purpose, of re
oragnizlng the Harriman lines in com
pliance with the recent decision of the
United States Supreme Court. It was
admitted today,' however, by minor op
erating officials that the preliminary
work for the reorganization of the
Harriman lines would be based on re
ports and discussions made at the gath
ering tomorrow.
"The meeting of the operating heads
of the Harriman lines here tomorrow,"
Mr. Monroe said. "Is merely the an
nual gathering of traffic officials and
I do not know Just what will be taken
up. The meeting has nothing to do
with the recent decision of the United
States Supreme Court."
Mr. Monroe would not discuss the
court's decision.

In Paris entitled "At Napoleon's Com
mand." O'er France resounds the rumble and
the din of war. The world, astounded
by the military genius of Napoleon,
halts aghast at his crushing victories.
But still the cry, "more men," Is
heard, and partings are sad and sor
rowful. The scene changes to the Palace in
Paris, unrivalled in lavish splendor.
Haughty dames arrayed in costly
gowns. Jewels of price upon their heads
and around their throats, vie in splen

uniforms.
Comes the great battle between the
Allies and France. Amid all the hor
rors and the glories of the scene, un
disturbed by cannon or by carnage,
there stands out the short, stocky fig
ure of the greatest military genius of
the modern world. Cooly and calmly,
but with masterly hand, he directs the
maneuvers and the closing scene finds
him indomitable as ever.
