17 TITE MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 121912. FINK FISH TOO LOW Packers Say There Is No Prof it in Present Prices. HOLDING BACK SUPPLIES Lorser Consumption Lxpecleu as Jl eu 1 1 of Hfi ro pea n Ya c, Shortage Is Figured, Even Ten der Xornial Conditions. An unusual situation exist in the canned salmon market. particularly a concern pink tlah. It i by no means satisractory to the pink salmon canners. hut. tlvy see signs on the borixon of a change for the better. For years It has ben customary for these packers to sell their output at prices witn th makinr of which they had little to do. The red salmon packers have been In the habit of making the opnine price on pink as wll as red fiflh. Tp to this time the rink salmon people have patiently stood for this, but in future years they will prob ably dictate their own policy. When the in us try was young the association was no doubt Juatlflfd 'n fixing the price or pin aalmon. When, last year, they put the price at $1. the pink salmon packers naturally made no complaint, but this year. rhen the big association fixed the opening price on reds at 1.4t and medium r-ds at SI. 15 and at the same time listed pinks at 63 cents and chums at ct-nts, there was complaint long, loud and deep. The pink saimon cannc-rs say they are not insisting on a $1 market this year, but thev declare cmphatlcaily t:..r T. conts Is en entirely unnrafonbIe and unprofitable quotation. The normal value of pinks this year, thev say. should be JH or S3 cents. They also figure :her will be a shortage of 1,000.000 cares of pinks. There will possibly be a b'.g pack on the Sound next year, but whether there is or not, there wlil re a shortage brfore the f-ar Is over. Con sumption fr five years has be.n increasing tead:!y since maikets were developed. The war in Enstprn Kurope fs already stimulat ing the demand and shouTd the disturbance become general., the shortage will be many times over what is already estimated. Anticipating a stronger market later, xnany packers are not putting their holdings on the market at the present time. There re a so some speculative operations under way, in view of possible strong develop ments in the coming months. EASIER IMiKKTONE IN WHEAT Trade IJght in All Cerent linen Much Tour Hay Offered.
