(EpeciaU Bettlxisr on election r.ult, both in this state and in the Nation, with i a few Isolated wagers on local results, became more general today, but a care ful analysis the bets recorded shows that there is no significance in the early money appearance. For instance, there was bet J1000 to $600 that Woodrow Wilson would be elected Tresident while in the house that carries the money there was dis played a telegram from San Francisco showing that Wilson was a two-five chance in the south. The bei, as re corded, was a clear toss-off of The same man today placed a 1-2 bet that Wilson would beat Roosevelt .n this state and afterwards deposited a big amount on even terms and the same bet. And so far as could be learned practically all the betting done today was at even terms, whether county or state results were Involved. Bettors Xovr More Assured. The only significance of the betting was that men who wager on election results are beginning to believe that conditions are becoming well enough known to justify betting. Heretofore everybody has been so uncertain that election fans would rather shake dice than take a chance on the voters. Rufus R. Wilson, who managed Miles Polndexter's successful campaign and who launched the Roosevelt boom in this state, started a new move ment today In favor of Ernest Lister, Democratic nominee for Governor. Wil son is. or says he is. Lister's personal political manager and, as he has done some things that confirm his claim of controlling Lister, politicians be lieve the Wilson scheme really comes from Lister headquarters. Wilson started a movement to pro cure signatures of about 100 Bull Moose and Democrats who would Indorse a fusion ticket with Utter as the nomi nee for Governor. Alex Falconer, of Ev erett, on the slate for Representative-at-Large, and C. G. Helfner. the nomnlee for Representative in the First District, the remainder of the ticket to be made up later. Wtlsoa Appears Hopeful. Wilson insisted on this trio, for all are men whom Wilson either supports or who are most likely to defeat men whom Wilson opposes. It was the Wil son Idea that the slate should be agreed upon by Sunday and then sent out, over the signatures of 100 or more Bull Moose and Democrats on juxnuaj. -son believed that this belated advice would Influence enough votes to elect Llter Several Bull M"( leaders were approached on the scheme and they say they did not agree to it. Lister Entered Too Late. Ernest Lister, the Democratic nomi nee, has never had a chance to win, any opportunity he may have had being negatived by the fact that he entered the race far too late. Judge W. W. Black, who defeated Lister in the pri maries, was declared Ineligible only a few weeks ago and the Democratic mantle then fell qn Lister. Bob Hodge, the Bull Moose nominee, has been eliminated by the disclosures made regarding his private life and his public, official and prize ring rec ord. " o i. - - He is urging his followers to go to Lister, In a vain enaeavur iu Aside from the Governor, the other candidates on the Republican state ticket are all well known, while prac tically nothing is heard of the Demo cratic and Bull Moose aspirants. Republican Victory Predicted. Reports from all over the state in dicate a sweeping victory for the Re publican state and Congressional tick ets and political observers say that the party's majority will be large. It Is practically conceded, for example, that Albert Johnson, of Hoquiam, can didate for Congress in the Second Dis trict, will easily defeat Stanton War burton, of Tacoma, incumbent, and Bull Moose candidate. Warburton has hith erto had a strong following, but his chance of success is regarded now as next to nothing. Reports also show President Taft wel! in the lead. Democrats and Bull Moosers claim the state for Wilson and Roosevelt respectively by large ma jorities, but they cite nothing on which to base their claims. The total vote of the state will run this year between 280,000 and 300,000. It may even exceed the latter figure, although that Is not likely. Taft Gaining Rapidly. It is clear, therefore, from the pri mary returns that the Republican party has a lead over its nearest competitor of about 64.000 and there is everything to show that Taft will win a big vic tory In the state. Disaffection in the Republican ranks and there was some several months ago has died away rapidly during the past month and it Is admitted on all sides now that the President has gained great strengtn. It is also clear that Roosevelt cannot win and that, under that circumstance, a vote for him means a vote for Wil on and free trade. Washington is not a free-trade state. Republicans here who followed Roosevelt in the beginning have come to realize that they cannot vote for a protective tariff. In which they believe, by voting for Roosevelt, and that-the only way they can vote their real tariff beliefs is to vote for Taft. That has made the President thousands of votes so many that Washington will be found In the Taft column when the polls are closed next month. A prediction of majority on the Na tional ticket cannot be made with such positive certainty as on the state tick et, for the reason that, hundreds of voters are silent on the subject. Some of these were Bull Moosers several months ago, who have now made up their minds that they cannot afford to vote for Roosevelt. Others have been In doubt all alonsr as to where their ballot would go. They have been wait ing the turn of the tide, now running strongly for Taft, before making up their decision definitely. Since it is realized that Roosevelt cannot win and that the Issue Is really protection with Taft; or free trade with Wilson, the Taft vote has reached such proportions that the state Is safe for the President. Hotel Employe Pleads Guilty. ALBANY, Or.. Oct. St. (Special.) Gilbert Olson, a former employe of the Franklin House in this city, pleaded guilty In the State Circuit Court here today to a charge of selling liquor In violation of the local option liquor law. Judge Kelly will Impose sentence next Monday. Olson was in dicted at the last term of court ami pleaded guilty when his case was called for trial this forenoon.
