The particular assertions to which this commission tak exception, and the truth of which we most emphatically deny, are these which we quote verbatim from the '"wi do not care to comment on the cor rectness of the soundlnss taken at the mouth of the river. It matters not whether there are IT feet or even J7 f'et. the fsct remains that there Is not sufficient water to accommodate the vessels which now come to the river, to say nothing of the deeper onee. expected when the Panama , t snal Is finished. Of the deeply laden rreft which have crossed out of the river durlns the past year fully 75 per cent struck on the bar. and the battleship Ore gon which crossed out at high tide on Julv 13 of this year, drawina J feet s Inches, struck six times. .The truth of that assertion csn be ascertained by In quiry at the Navy Department." The above quoted statements are absolute ly fale. As to the Vf. S. S. Pesse. a Columbia River pilot who handled the vessel between Astoria and Portland. Oregon's Commander Write. r. S. a Oregon. Seattle. Wash.. July 1. Hill captain C. tf. Ounderson. River Pilot, Columbia River. Astoria, Or. My Dear Cap tain Gunderson: I arrived safely In Seattle at S P. M. on Sunday the 14th and waited off Seattle for the fleet to arrive and went in with them. I most sincerely thank you for the ex cellent work that you did as pilot in bring ing this ship from Astoria across the bar. It Is a Job that only men like you would tackle, and It Is a grave question in my . j ,.,.. the .hit, really touched. When she bobs down toward the bottom she Invariably checks her speed, and if she did touch It was so light that it was scarcely noticeable. It is absolutely sure that no Injury whatever occurred. . Yours sincerely, (Slgned H. X. JENSOJ. Lieutenant-Commander T7. S. N., Com manding V. S. S. Pennsylvania. As to the assertion that 75 per cent of the deeply laden vessels crossing the bar during the past year havo struck we can say that It Is' the consensus of opinion among the pilots in the employ of the Port of Portland, men who have had years of expjerlence and who handle the vessels crossing the bar. that not over ( per cent of tue vessels crossing the bar during the past year have touched. Author's Motive Questioned. In order to make plain our reasons for refuting the false statements of those who. actuated by motives, the consciousness of which prompts them to conceal their Iden tity by anonymous letters, we respectfully call your attention to the fact that the people of Portland have spent in the past, through the medium of the Port of Port land, over f3.000.0o0 In Improving the ac cessibility and facilities to build up the commerce of this port and the Columbia River generally. They will spend greater sums in the future. What has Astoria and Its Chamber of Commerce ever done for the good of the commerce using the Columbia River? They have done absolutely noth ing. So far from making any effort for the Improvement of the port or spending, one dollar to promote Its welfare they have, on the contrary, constantly belittled the work that has been done by others. Ap parently the only interest mey no m plng is when Its presence affords oppol . ,. . . ..in hi- means ox lunuy iui iriiiin.i..j .. the petty grafts which are often levied on shipping. . , It Is characteristic of the' narrow Indi vidual that he will use the organizations which theoretically exist for promoting the general welfare, to promote only his selfish Interests at the expense of the cominunlty as a whole. We believe that It is this disposition that Is the real cause of the Astoria complaint against the removal of the Chinook. They want the dredge in commission because their narrowness of thought will not permit them to see any thing more desirable than an opportunity to sell a few supplies to the dredge. Trusting that we have made clear the ... n '. v. i.tnpf. ,atments aa well aa the motives prompting them we beg to remain. xours sincerely. THE PORT OF PORTLAND. By S. M. Mears, Pres.
